Does anyone ever actually message the seller before they bid/ buy if the price looks high? Or try to calculate it out first to see if it's actually accurate?

Good question. In the end, it's all semantics. eBay views every dollar collected as a billable dollar, nothing is sacred. Part of the reason I really only ever sell BIN with free shipping...I'm not going to get every cent collected to cover shipping and it's just one more fee to cut into my profit margin. It is what it is. Sellers would be smarter to start their auctions at a higher dollar amount, including whatever they want to cover the price of shipment, and just offer free shipping...it's all the same.

Hive the shipping charges were in the open, I really think its a bad move dinging his dsr's provided he gets the package fast. If you know the charge buy it or pass.

It's so hard for me to understand people who think this way.

Think of it this way. You go to nice restaurant that you've never been to, but all your friends recommend it so you go with them. It's all nice stuff, but you really just want a cheeseburger. You find it on the menu, and wow, it's $14.99! Well, at least you know you're going to be getting a really good burger. They bring it out, and it's actually one of those $1.99 frozen cheeseburgers you get at 7-11 and microwave. Are you happy with your meal? I mean, you knew you were getting a cheeseburger, and you knew how much it cost before you "bid".

When you bid on an item, you know how much the shipping will set you back, but you really have no idea how they are going to ship it. That part is a surprise. You are allowed to be pissed if you didn't get what you paid for, even if you knew how much the shipping cost before you paid for it.

I once won a single baseball card that had $7 s/h. It was one of those situations where I was willing to pay $20 for the card, and my $13 bid was more than enough to win the item. I was going to leave a neutral for the high shipping though. When I got the card, it was in a brand new screw down, which was in a protective layer of bubble wrap, which was in an Exquisite basketball box, which was in a priority shipping box. In the end, I was incredibly pleased with $7 shipping, and left a positive. I never thought I could be satisfied paying $7, but this guy proved me wrong.

Maybe the OP will feel like he got his $50 worth.

I kinda agree with RL24. I've purchased some pretty big lots on ebay and also just singles. I've had guys send me stuff that I had ignored the high shipping on. If I want the card(s), I want the card(s)And I'll be damned, but they seriously took the time and effort to make it worth the extra money. Plus, I've had some weird situations where the guy really spent what he said it would cost to ship. But it was because I'd get like an 800 count lot and instead of using flat rate box shipping, he sent the damn thing in a box as long as a baseball bat(I seriously thought a buddy had mailed me a bat we were haggling over). And inside was tucked the 800 count box. I also had a guy mail me a Bagwell autograph I won inside a box(big enough to hold a mini helmet) which is the only thing that kept it safe from the rain. I was pissed as it was raining that day and the postwoman laid it on our front steps without ringing the bell. But when I went out to my mailbox, the damn lid was open so had it been in a bubble mailer, who knows. I mean, sellers do all kinds of stuff, everyone is different, and I feel at the end of the day, you need to decide if the price you are paying is worth it. If you are cool with it, then do it. But yeah, if the guy charges a lot of money and then sends it in a pwe, he's kinda skirting the system.
