I was contacted by someone interested in my 68 ven, and 69/71/73 team nolan ryan cards. Offered $3500 for the four, which would be about a $1000 profit.

I would never do this, as I am not sure I would sell them for $50,000 as they are cards that I likely never could replace. Nice to know though that you can still make a sizable profit on cards that are 40 year old

I'd sell just about anything I own for a $1000 profit. Maybe not my car, because that's not that much of a profit on a several thousand dollar item, but for a stupid baseball card, in a heartbeat.

I got offered 5K for my Crusade Will Clark prototype set, yielding profit of about 4500 if I remember right. He wasn't even in the ballpark of what I'd accept, so I can understand what you mean. The cards mean more to me than the money does and I'd constantly regret if I ever sold them. Glad there are at least a few collector's as passionate about their collection as I am.

You guys are better than I. I would find it hard to not sell ANYTHING at such a huge profit knowing that I could simply start the quest to find them again cheaper. I see it as almost starting a new adventure, not loosing something. That's just me.

The one thing you are missing is the fact that these 4 cards could likely never be replaced.

The ven has 7 cards graded.
the 69 has 4
the 71 has 4
the 73 has 2 (tied for best grade)

these cards are not likely to show up ungraded so moving them would be almost imposable.

I have no knee-jerk response to this that would be percieved as a slight to your intellect for rejecting this, so I will just say kudos to you for caring so much about collecting your player. I have a wife, kid, kid on the way, and a 2nd home I'm trying to sell...almighty dollar reigns most days for me.

Interesting offer indeed, but you should already know that vintage, specifically rare vintage, is the gold standard of all of card collecting. Realizing a potential profit on such rare and impressive cards should not come as a suprise.

Apples and oranges though. I know plenty of collectors who couldn't give two flips about a Nolan Ryan vintage.

That's really cool that cards mean more to you than anything. I appreciate your passion for collecting, but I have to disagree completely on this one.

If someone offered me 10x what I paid for something, I'd sell every single bit of it and laugh my way to the bank.

Money is money. Anyone can earn more of it. If there are special cards in a collection, then what's the use of having money instead? Especially bouwob, it's not like in another decade he still can't make a sincere profit on them.

It is a hobby. There just comes a point where you must be objective about things. Think about it.. If you bought a sofa and had it a year or so, long enough to appreciate it, and then someone offered you ten times what you paid, would you turn them down?

If you want to chat about sofas, you can talk to my wife. The sofas we have I'd give them to you for free as they are ugly and uncomfortable. They are "cute" and as I understand things....they "tie the room together"

Anyway, yeah. A sofa isn't a hobby. Cards are. I guess it's all the attitude going into buying each card. Do I want it because I love it or do I want it because I think I will make money on it? To each their own and we all spend our time and money our own way, but I understand where bouwob and the clark guy are coming from.
