With his HR yesterday, Ryan Zimmerman extended his hitting streak to 19 games. Usually, when players go on hitting streaks, their batting average soars. Most hitting streaks create batting averages over .350 during the streak, and it is quite common to see .400 over the streak (Chipper Jones actually batted .512 in his 20-game streak in 2006). However, Zimmerman only has 25 hits in his 19 game streak, amounting to a relatively small .309 average.

Since 2000, every hit streak of 20 games or more has resulted in a higher average than Zimmerman's .309. Miguel Tejada (24 games) and Placido Palanco (20 games) both batted .333 during their hit streaks, but the prize for lowest average in a 20+ hit streak (in the last 10 years) belongs to Casey Blake. His 26 game streak in 2007 produced only a .317 average.

That is interesting. As a rule of thumb, I'd look at a player's non-streak lines and just add 1 hit to every game, and that obviously raises average a good deal. That he's barely over .300 means he's really not hitting extremely well, just timely. Not that .309 is terrible. By contrast, Joe DiMaggio went 91-for-223 during his 56-gamer, a .408 average.

that is very interesting. i guess this is why its called a "consecutive games hit streak" and not a "as much as you can hit over a certain amount of games streak"

Those timely hits will not come forever for Zimmy. He is one of my favorite players, but soon or a later he will lose the streak.

Very interesting stuff David.

It's funny because the other day I was actually wondering who had the lowest batting average of all time during a 20+ game hitting streak, is this anything you can look up? :)

Thanks. I can only check back to 1954, but here is what I have found for you:

Tommie Agee batted .288 in a 20-gamer in 1970.
Ron Oester batted .306 in a 21-gamer in 1984.
Kent Hrbek batted .308 in a 23-gamer in 1982.

Those appear to be the lowest averages in a 20 game hit streak since 1954.

Thought this was interesting...Pete Rose had 70 hits in his 44 game streak in 1978, but had no triples or home runs. Had no idea about that.

David, you should have been something other than a leather salesman.

Cool facts as always.

Update:

Since I made this post, Zimmerman has extended his streak to 22 games (when I first posted, it was at 19 games).

He has gone 2-4, 2-4, and 4-4 in those 3 games, raising his average to .355 during the streak (33 for 93).
