I realize that the first instinct is to say, hell no. But lets just look at the numbers.

Is he top 5?

Here are the numbers:

W-L - 14-3

ERA - 3.19

K's - 119

K/9 - 7.40

Average against - .237

WHIP - 1.19

In the discussion, of course. This shouldn't even be a question.....I assume it is a question because of how poorly he pitched with NYY? That seems a tad unfair..

I don't think he will come close to winning it but can see him get a few votes if he keeps going like he has all season.

Agreed, in the discussion but he has not been as good as Strasburg, Kershaw and a few others. Definitely been really impressive though and there's still games left to be played.

you have Vogelsong, Lynn, Gio Gonzalez and maybe even a few others.. he will be in there but won't get much of a vote. Congrats to him though for rebounding from a terrible stay in NY.

I would argue AJ and Lynns numbers are damn near the same, with AJ's ERA being .21 lower. Lynn is 13-4, AJ is 14-3, other numbers are dang close as well. Should be interesting...

In the discussion? Absolutely. Front-runner? Not a chance. Good choices by others, but that RA Dickey guy is the front-runner. Leads the league in wins, complete games, shutouts, strikeouts. He's number two in IP (three behind Kershaw who has pitched one more game than Dickey), number four in ERA, number two in WHIP, number six in BAA and of course, only three losses.

The thing that will hurt Burnett is the few games he missed. With the high amount of competition for the Cy Young in the NL, that will hurt him.

Considering that 25% of the runs he has allowed to score were given up in one game...

Here are his stats excluding his May 2nd Start (2.2 IP, 12 ER):

W-L - 14-2

ERA - 2.42

K's - 117

Cy Young?

I would rank RA Dickey, Strasburg and Matt Cain ahead of Burnett.

I would give the final nod to Cain

Is it b/c he has less IP, wins, complete games, WAR, or strikeouts than Dickey? Or is it b/c he has a higher H/9? Maybe it's b/c they have the same ERA and the default goes to Cain b/c he's on a better team?

Man that perfect game just puts you on ahead and you don't have to look back.

;) (winky to show it's all in jest and so I don't get banned)

On topic, he'll be in the discussion but the field is just too large.

I believe Cueto deserves a lot of the attention and should be in the top 3 at this point along with Dickey and Strasburg.

Having more wins doesnt guarantee the Cy anymore.

The rest of your arguement is valid and with that said if Dickey doesnt completely fall apart, I dont see why he shouldnt get it.

But yes, the perfect game does factor into the conversation for Cain

Or maybe it's Cain's WHIP is significantly better than Dickey. Maybe voters will vote for him after so many strong seasons with no run support.

But i don't think Cain is the front runner, currently.

perfect scenario, burnett and pirates make series, he beats yanks in game 7, then wins cy young.
then its made into a movie, Burnett becomes crazy famous

As long as we get to see his wife punch him in the eye, I'm cool with that. I'd see the movie.

I got him down for Comeback Player of the Year, but I don't think he'll be getting the Cy Young. Maybe top 5...

Which is more impressive: 1 perfect game, or back to back 1 hitters? Tough call...

Burnett has had an incredible year, but not realistically in the top 3 in the NL Cy Young. Also, trying to figure out why no one talks about Johnny Cueto. His ERA is better than Matt Cains, he is tied for the league lead in wins (14 vs. 10 for Cain and 9 for Kershaw). He gives up a few more hits, but he has only given up 7 homers the whole year and he holds runners on better than about any right hander in the league. So the hits he gives up don't hurt as often. Not saying he is the clear cut favorite, but he should at least be in the discussion with the other favorites.

My thoughts exactly. Cueto doesn't get much love in this. I think he is definitely top 3 for the Cy Young. He was snubbed on the All-Star roster as well. For some reason, only us Reds fans notice how good he is.

Just having "aj" and "cy young" mentioned in the same sentence is grounds for locking a thread.
