is BGS following their own stated grading criteria?

It's an ugly Gem Mint whether it's graded "properly" or not. That is a point that should be made. Buy the card, not the grade.

It's not an ugly gem mint, have you seen it beyond a scan? I held it in my hand, showed it off to the chat room, and honestly there is nothing glaringly wrong with it. I think I am qualified to speak on what's a decent looking card. If it wasn't for this thread, I would have looked at it and not even had a second thought about the grade. The card is fine.

there's nothing to give up. just wanting to see those pics gilmo said he was going to get. the majority only have the original scan to go by, so i'm curious how mint the card actually is compared to the original scan.

shocking  someone would post such a terrible representation of a card, on auction nonetheless!
I didn't have time while he was set up to get back to the card. I had other things to worry about.

This pic is enough, and should shut everyone up about this particular card.

I know **** about grading, but it still looks OC to me in this pic, so I fail to see how this should "shut everyone up"

I think people who spend money to grade their cards have a legit beef here.

If the card is "bowed in the case", or is obscured by the scan, why doesn't this topic come up all the time?

Why do 99% of well centered cards look well centered when scanned in their slab? What is so special about this card?

To me the difference with this card is I held it. It does not look that bad in person, also the people in the chat room said to them that the picture did not represent the card as well as the scan either. I'm not saying shut up or anything, but I have no reason to lie about it the card in person looks better than it photographs.

That's cool Rob, and it's not that I don't believe you and Gilmore. I just can understand why people are upset and questioning it.

If nothing else, cards like this simply highlight the fact that grading is an opinion based system. People buy and sell BGS slabbed cards based on their reputation. Either choose to buy into it, or don't.

I also saw the Taillon in question at the show and while it looks better than the scan shows. I'm not going to say for certain that it falls into the criteria for a BGS 9 on centering because I didn't crack it out of the slab and measure the borders with a pica ruler. Was it glaring one way or the other? No.

If I was looking to purchase a Gem copy of this card, I would not buy this one based on the visual evidence. Regardless if it's a mirage or what not, SOMETHING doesn't look right and it doesn't "look" Gem in any scan I have seen. It's not horrible, but where there is smoke there is fire, and I see a lot of smoke when looking at the centering of this card.

What do you guys think the T/B centering is on my gold Chapman, based solely on this dig pic?

Forget the head-on scan below!!!!!! Just forget it, okay? Rumor has it that the head-on scans play tricks on us and can no longer be trusted. Conclusion: I think this dig pic should "shut everybody up" who dares to doubt my gorgeous Chapman gold is anything less than a 9 on centering. Of course I'm human and perhaps my eye-balls don't line up in my head and the card could be a 10, but at least it looks close to 50-50 now. Just FYI, I've also had about 10 of my buddies check it out in person and they all claim it's at least 9, although one isn't so sure.

Thank God for digital cameras to help us out in times of need. I almost got duped by my own scanner on this Chapman. Nuts.
