Is Dan Hardy REALLY the #1 contender?

No way!
He needs to win against better guys!

He took Swick & Davis to the a decision.
Both are great fighters, and I'm a HUGE Swick fan, but I don't think that counts as a title shot.
He couldn't finish either of them.

He hasn't beaten Fitch, Thiago, Kosh, DIEGO, Kampmann, Condit. What gives him the right to be next in line?
I'd love to see Diego beef up and give GSP a run for his money.

I love Diego Sanchez as much as anybody but he is better suited for lightweight. Diego fought at welterweight until this year. That is where his two losses came from (Koscheck and Fitch).

Diego beefing up wouldn't solve his St. Pierre probem, nor his incessant mentioning of Jesus.

Well, it used to be his weight class before the last 2 fights, and he would have a better chance than Hardy was my point.

Diego is not moving up. He is dominating at 155 and I think he's going to beat Penn. It doesn't matter who is the No.1 contender at 170 because aside from a punchers chance nobody is beating GSP. He's beaten every kind of fighter thrown at him. Thiago had what 25lbs on him at fight time and was dominated by GSP.

Hes not but the clear cut #2 and #3 in the division got dominated so bad by the champ that in a sense, he kind of is the top contender who hasnt already been beaten by the current champ!
Heres the problems with that division:

I would have said Koscheck should get a fight for the title but hes only 2 fights removed from getting TKO'd from a guy making his UFC debut where Koscheck was a HEAVY favorite.
I would have said Rumble Johnson but he just lost to Koscheck.
I would say Fitch but hes only 2 fights removed from getting trounced by GSP plus both his wins since have been decisions.
I would say Alves but he hasnt fought since the GSP fight plus he has a loss to Fitch a few years ago that he needs to redeem.
I would say Swick but he lost just lost to Hardy.

So who does that leave?

Now I am not even getting into Condit or Paul Daley or Kampmann because I think we could agree that Hardy has been more impressive than all 3.
Plus I am not mentioning the 3 AKA guys who wont fight each other ; Fitch, Kos, Swick.

...and you just mapped out the issue the UFC has with the division and having a #1 contender. The UFC had their hands tied with no good resolution.

Now, if the UFC could do a Welterweight grand prix tourney for the #1 contender status, that would be sweet! Winner to take on GSP for the title.

THAT would be a way to earn it.

Interesting.

I didnt say that, I said that Hardy is more deserving than Condit, Daley, and Kampmann. But yes I do think Hardy could take Condit.
Condit barely squeeked by Jake Ellenburger and lost to Kampman. He took to much punishment in those fights that leads me to believe a guy like Hardy would crack him good!
