You might say crazy. I say I'm an "advanced collector." Foil FoWs are rare, will continue to be rare, and while they may or may not increase in value, I enjoy owning one.

When you buy a Magic card for that much, are you actually using it in game play or is it for your collection?

In this case, it's just a collectors item. It is legal to play with, but no chance my copy will ever get shuffled up. There are guys who will though. And other cards I own are even more expensive, and they do get played. This card being mint, and foily surface, I don't want to risk messing up.

My favorite is when a set gets shipped in a 600-count or 800-count box with no double-boxing...just a mail label and postage on the outside....and always the corners totally banged up, which means that last 50 cards on that end of the box are dinged. Unnreal. How hard is it to double-box?

Hence why I'd rather buy everything set wise at a shop, or at the very least bust a ton of it at retail and put the remainder together from sportlots.

Forgive my ignorance...but what foil magic card is worth seven bills? If I recall correctly foil stuff didn't start coming out until the tail end of Urza's stuff(Legacy and so on) or Mercadian Masques. The foil cards were sweet. Especially the blue ones. But none of them ever seemed worth that much.

Have they gone up that much?

There was a card printed in Alliances called Force of Will. It's one of the most powerful cards in the game. It has never been reprinted, and the relatively tiny supply keeps its price varying between $50-$100, depending on...stuff. You're correct they didn't have foils back then (Urza's Legacy was the first foily set). So one small printing, no foils. This spring, ostensibly to mark 5000 Magic judges being certified worldwide, IIRC, they sent out a specially printed foil copy to judges who had certified other judges. Depending on their rank and other factors, some got 1 copy, some 2, but I don't think anyone got more than 4. Print runs on Magic cards are nearly never announced, so no one can be sure how many there are, but estimates are 1500-2500. For a single Magic card, that's quite small. For a new printing of one of the most utilized cards in the game, it's insane. Throw in the exclusive and limited distribution method, and many of the recipients of the cards will just keep them, and you end up with a $700 card.

Actually, that's a good point about foils. While there are quite a few regular cards more expensive than the foil FoW, I can't think of a foil card that much. Maybe the Champs foil Mutavault or Doran. Or Worldwake Jace, which was super-hot about a year ago and selling for about $600-700 solidly, but has cooled off quite a bit since.

Cool. I think I had a force of will at one time but never used it in a deck. I had a bunch of supposedly powerful cards but I was never a master at putting a good deck together.

As for the foils, they were worth some change but I guess people, at least when I was collecting, just seemed to be more interested in cards to play with so the foil thing was nice but not necessary.

I'd love to see a polymorph (mirage I believe?) in a foil. That thing would pop!

Yes, Polymorph has been reprinted a couple times, I think, so foils are out there.
