I've only put in like $400-500, but when you break it down, I've made like $2.54 for every dollar I've put in. Bought a used car with profit ($700) among other things (reinvestment, dates, wax, and other stuff).

I do pretty well. Up about $12K this year, $35Kish in sales and spent around $23k.

How do you manage to only have $900 in eBay fees with $30k in income? Do a ton of shows?

A lot of FCB and live sales.

Also, when I input payments received I use the number AFTER PayPal takes their cut, so if I've netted $30k I've probably sold another $1000+ that's subtracted by fees. That's kind of a confusing sentence so let me know if I can clarify any more.

I know what you mean. I just wish FCB had the football traffic that it has for baseball so I could save on those fees like that!

I separate my investments from my collection, wax, etc. This way you can remove the luck factor from it and see how good of an investor you are (i.e., breaking hundreds of dollars of wax and getting lucky enough to hit a $2k card doesn't make you a smart investor, but buying hundreds of dollars of singles and selling them for $2K does).

I have done very well with my investments, with more expected profit on the way. I don't care to share exact numbers but I have profited between $999-$9,999 over a three and a half year stretch with a limited budget.

I probably lost quite a bit when I got back into collecting in 2006 solely because I was trying to build my collection. Then, I amassed so much stuff that I had to sell some of it. So I looked at it as a bonus when I made few hundred dollars.

Buy now I've become serious about prospecting, and as Warren Buffet says "Don't be tempted to spend your profits. Reinvest." That's exactly what I've been doing over the past year. So now that I've pretty much collected everything that I've wanted, I plan on doing nothing but make money now. Although that's not to say that I won't buy a card from time to time that I will keep, but my motives have changed. It keeps things interesting.

Also, if I come across a great deal on a veteran, I'll look to sell if I can make money, otherwise it goes in my personal collection.

It is also very hard for me to sell guys when they get hot if I am away at college. I missed a huge window to sell my liriano collection last year when he started 4-0 with an era under 1. got back from college a few weeks later and it was already too late ::facepalm::

Does your image refer to buying and flipping singles or case busting?

I would buy the monster boxes of cheap cards for a while and just search them at home for nice cards and list them. Sometimes I would sell player lots of 2 row boxes of base and cheap inserts, Always made money from them. The stuff that wouldnt sell, Just sell that to a dealer at another show. Last year, I bought the remainder of cards from a shop that shut down in 2000. The amount of inserts from 97-00 was insane in all sports, the boxes had about fifteen 1 of 1's and countless under /50. Paid 500 and sold for almost 12x that amount to a dealer. Picked out what I wanted and sold the rest. He probably made a killing on the rest, I made out well and kept killer PC cards. Over the years, Not sure how much I have lost or made might broke even for all I know.

If you are in a hobby to make money, Its not a hobby anymore. I use card money to buy cards and will not use any other money to purchase cards.

Got into the hobby in 2003, total spending/sales over the past 8 years including postage, supplies, etc...
Purchases: $4,200
Sales: $3,200

Have another ~$500 worth of cards right now which are waiting to be moved. That leaves me with my entire O'Neill collection, and Yankee auto collection worth a few thousand dollars. Overall, after considering the value of my PC I am probably on top somewhere in the $1-2K range.

I am a player collector, and not a dealer or a prospector who actively seeks out singles or lots to break up. I am happy if my sales cover the majority of my PC purchases so that I don't have to add money out of pocket. I am still not quite there yet, I usually have to add a $100 to $150 a year out of pocket which is not terrible. But not as impressive as some of the numbers posted above.

But was all that work really worth the extra 5k? How much is your time worth?

I don't know about him but for me it's definitely worth the money simply because I find it to be fun regardless of overall win/loss. If it weren't fun, I'd be better off working at McDonald's for minimum wage, but the fact that it is enjoyable and very little actual work (the work is not much more than researching, listing, and shipping) makes it worth the work/time.

That's where the fun is. Also you have to account for cards kept. I have used prospecting to buy cards that I collect. It's nice to have nice cards without the burden of having to pay household income for them.

What HYPE and Gilmo said, and something that I wanted to post in another thread that was locked last week before I could read through all 13 pages. For some of us, the buying and selling is part of the hobby and as much fun as what we get to keep. What seems to be lost on a lot of people is that not all of us can spend 5-10k a year on cards and keep everyting and absorb that outlay of money. As long as I'm breaking even and not losing money, it's worth my time. It's not like it's time taken away from my family or regular job, I am at a point where I think I have everything balanced and most of my priorities in order.

I lose money EVERYTIME I bust wax.

I offset it by reading and trusting certain prospect evaluators.

Busting is fun but listing/scanning/shipping is not.

Without a doubt. I'm able to profit off what is still a hobby to me. I've met a number of great people who I'm glad to call my friends through it. And I've immersed myself more than ever in following a game that I love.

I've wondered why vending boxes aren't brought back, one would think they'd be cheaper than boxes/cases given the lack of wrappers. How tough would it be for Topps to also sort them/there'd be no need to collate them if they came directly after cutting the sheets.
