Roman Mendez, Chris McGuinness, a player to be named later, and cash to Texas in the deal.

Good luck with all that. He has been a bust with the Rangers.

I still believe, as I have all along, that the Red Sox have good young catchers. I must have more faith in them than Theo apparently :( Especially with this new guy Ibarra that they signed, I thought they were going to promote from within at catcher.

The next Brandon Phillips. Remember Phillips busted with the Indians after the Colon deal and got dealt to the Reds.. Salty will be a good player in Boston..

Ever since he hurt his shoulder this year and hasn't been able to throw the ball back to the pitcher I'd say he's been a "bust", but before that he was a solid young guy.

Sad to see him go, but frack the Red Sox.

That name will look good on a Sox uniform.

You may be right. Last I heard Salty had made a little progress with the throwing yips. I saw him at OKC in early June. He was double and triple clutching throws back to the pitcher but not throwing any into the OF. He was destroying AAA pitching at the time but has slowed since. He's only 25, is a switch hitter and has some power so he has some value. His defense is ok if the throwing thing gets worked out. He pissed off some people in the organization by hiding his injury and some said he had a sense of entitlement even though he hasn't really done anything in the big leagues. Change of scenery may be the thing he needs. What can Red Sox Fans tell us about Christopher McGuiness and Roman Mendez?

edited for horrible spelling

I can tell you the 2 players alone are too much to give up for Salty. Mendez has a fastball that he can hit up to 99 with and hes only 20. Hes raw, but has a very high ceiling, tons of potential. Mcguiness... i dunno, I like him but hes below 2 other firstbaseman who were also lefty bats with power potential in Lars and Rizzo. I dont know how much of a shot he would have had in the future with the Sox, but it still hurts to see any power potential bat leaving a system thats lacking big time. Depending who the PTBNL is in the deal from the Red Sox, they might have been taken....big time.

As long as this means I never have to see Kevin Cash take another at-bat......then I'm good with the deal.

I guess EXPO is still not thought of highly by the Sox as a potential future catcher for the Sox.

the lack of faith in our minor league catchers is becoming a concern...

expo, lavarnway, federowicz, wagner...

thought for sure one of them would be the guy, eventually.

i mean, lavarnway isnt young and he hasnt been good til this year but the guy is CRUSHING the ball....

:(

This move was made because their catchers in the minors are vastly over rated and this move proves just that.

Catching is definitely the most difficult position to prospect for sure, but it seems that there is a good chance that some organization do a very poor job of developing players. For instance with all the hoopla around Montero, Posada is still a fixture behind the plate. Salty was the big can't miss catcher in the braves system and now he is merely an afterthought.

Posey got the opportunity [really his bat was MLB ready] he is still learning behind the plate
Ramos was ready but had no place to play [catchers must catch to develop]
Rosario is a good one
Expo [thought his numbers were good enough to be a strong consideration]
Derek NOrris [probably to be bumped by Ramos from the equation]

Just would have thought one of their catchers would have gotten a chance. Salty is a rethread that has been moved a couple of times and he still don't realize he is not as good as the press clippings say. The Red Sox will soon find this out.

How is Federowicz doing? I though he tanked...but then again I dont follow BoSox prospects closely.
