Good luck finding a better ss for a while. I dont get why so many people dont give the guy any credit. Hes a good all around ss and certainly a hell of a later better than anything the Sox are going to trot out there for a while.

Did you ever watch any Sox games when he was playing? Anytime there was RISP he would ground out or the like. He had a mediocre glove at SS. He was a great hitter with no one on base.....and oh yeah, his best month in a Red Sox uni was last September. Did I mention the Red Sox had a record of 7-20 during that month?


Back to Varitek. I will definitely miss him, if not for behind the plate then solely for his presence on the team. I do hope he will stay a part of the organization. No one will wear the C for us this year.

Man, I can't wait to read all the Gammons ball-washing articles about Varitek. Maybe I should go read some of his predictions of greatness for Craig Hansen to warm up first.

If anyone other than Pedroia is given the C, I'd be disappointed. No one else on the team comes close.

Youkilis, was with the Sox, for both 04 and 07 World Series. has one year left on contract, next year is an option for 13M ( I think)
Pedroia would be the obvious choice, however, NO ONE WILL BE WEARING THE "C", this year or anytime in the near future.
That being said, I think Varitek will end in some capacity with Red Sox...

If they were to give it to someone, I'd be pretty certain that he'd get it. But I don't necessarily see a big reason for them to do it this season, especially since it doesn't appear anyone stepped up and took the role last season. Now I'm not saying anyone should have stepped up and basically told his teammates how to act, but that's the type of action that gets you the C. My guess is that no one gets it this year, and if things go well, and Pedroia or someone else steps up, they put it back in play for the 2013 season

I fully agree with you on this. After what happened last year, no reason for anybody to get it this season. Additionally, it's not like it's been a title that has been bestowed upon a player every year anyway so it doesn't NEED to be assigned to someone. Someone posted this on facebook, thought it was pretty cool/funny.
