If this is the best the Red Sox could get under the new administration, then Red Sox Nation is in deep doogie-doo.

They moved a utility guy and a AAA RP who struggled in the majors. Getting a half decent RP out of that is a success imo. The sox have 2 SS already and Aviles who's essentially the same player as Lowrie. They managed to pick up a useable bullpen arm without trading any of their legitimate trading chips
Didn't realize Aviles was a switch hitter :benson:

bard on the road and in preasure situation has not faired well. I do not beleive he has the make up to be an effective closer.

this means scutaro is going to be the best hitting shortstop in the red sox organization... UH OH!!!

Lowerie has shown that when he is healthy he can rake... rake... rake... Iglesias cannot hit! he will carry a lifetime batting average of .035 and that guy the sox picked up from the royals last year whats his name... if he is an answer to anything besides who is going to pinch run for pitchers in the late innings of road interleague games you might as well turn fenway into a *censored* parking lot. bard needs to move into the closer role! i hope the red sox draft andrew luck!

i think he serves the team better out of that role than a starter though. there isnt an arm in the red sox bully that strikes fear into hitters like he does. id rather have a timid slightly weaker closer who can work with excellent stuff than a guy who is a 87mph **** throwing sissy.

i would like to shoot bobby valentine, marco scutaro, and kelly shoppach to the sun in a plastic rocket. this has been a horrible off season for the sox. HORRIBLE!

Yea, Lowrie is a switch hitter, but that doesn't mean he should be. He hit .210 against lefties last year (200 AB) and .209 career vs lefties (350 AB). Aviles vs lefties = Lowrie vs righties, and Aviles vs righties > Lowrie vs. lefties

Just signed Nick Punto. Having both him and Aviles is a little strange - maybe they're going to trade Youkilis or Scutaro in a deal for a pitcher?

As a lifelong Red Sox fan, I can't believe people are upset at trading Jed Lowrie. This is a guy who cannot stay healthy and has a career high of games played at 88 in his 4 years in the majors. Lowrie is a "switch-hitter" who is a career .214 hitter from the left side of the plate in over 600 at bats. He has over 2/3 of his MLB at bats from the left side and an overall .252 average. He does not rake, he struggles to stay healthy and he struggles to hit righthanders.

They effectively gave up a utility infielder with injury issues and a guy in Weiland who didnt impress anyone during his two months in the majors and has a best case upside of Melancon, for a solid reliever who they have under control for the next four years.

HAHAHA you gotta love the crybaby Sox fans.
No matter what moves they do...the sky is falling. Just Pathetic!
Give it a rest. The Sox know what they are doing.
Overall this isn't that bad. Lowrie is good when healthy...but how often is that? not very... and Weiland was garbage.

yes their general direction this off season has been overwhelming focused. they failed to make a run at a major league shortstop which has been a glaring hole since 03. i dont think lowerie was a 10 year starter but he was certainly better than anyone they have on the team now. i would take an injured jed over a healthy marco anyday of the week. they lost their closer and talk about moving the best bullpen arm to the rotation. i am and will always be a fan but i am displeased with the direction of the team and have yet to see the step forward... or even maintaining of last years club. which if i recall last off season was winner winner for the sox.

Aren't they moving Aceves and Bard into the rotation?

Lowrie's a career .250 hitter that has never played 100 games in a year because he is softer than charmin ultra with aloe. He is a serviceable backup at best. The Sox need arms significantly more than bats. This is a small step in that direction but they still need more to solidify the pitching staff.

Who was the 2003 Red Sox Closer? How many people in Boston can name a closer that is not named Papelbon. I don't think being the potential closer here is an instant boost to value. He has to be dominant, and draw fan attention first. Bard stuff after he debuted never sold very high.

keith foulke, scott williamson, derek lowe, tom gordon to name a few

however i would never buy any card with a yanks uni on it regardless of who it is
