Chan Ho Park held a press conference in South Korea, A.J. Burnett pitched to Jorge Posada in the bullpen and CC Sabathia snapped off sliders for the first time. It wasn’t exactly a slow day in spring training, but as camp was breaking up, much of the buzz centered on Jesus Montero.

Although I don’t think any reporters were there to see it, word is that Montero hit the top of the scoreboard in left field with a batting practice home run off Triple-A hitting coach Butch Wynegar.

“I didn’t turn around and look,” Wynegar said. “I made him look good today.”

Apparently the blast hit the M in George M. Steinbrenner Field. That’s a long, long way. Joe Girardi watched a lot of batting practice and called Montero, “very mature offensively.”

“I usually can’t see them go that far,” he said. “You the swing. You hear the sound. You have a good idea where it’s going.”

Montero said that he hasn’t been trying to hit big home runs this spring. He’s spent most of his batting practice sessions trying to get a good feel for his swing.

“Today, I found it a little bit,” Montero said. “… I tried to put a good swing on the ball. Put a good swing on the ball, and that’s what happened.”

The scoreboard is in left-center, and is approx. 400ft from home plate, and is 59ft tall.

WOW!

Thought we were going to make it a day without a Montero thread.

Yeah. At least members are not saying that Montero can walk on water like LaPorta yet. ::facepalm::

WOW!

If he hit it off Brien Taylor, this feat would've been more impressive ...

that's a bomb no doubt, however a bp home run is nothing to get all riled up about.

I watched Wily Mo Pena drop bombs into the tress behind the scoreboard shown here, with EASE during BP on his rehab stint:

Everyone knows how that worked out...Im not hating on Montero, but I believe the tape measure shots some guys can hit means nothing until hes established in the bigs or at least hits it in a game.

The thing about this that's so fun, is that he's being honest when he says he's not TRYING to hit long homers.

He's an up the middle hitter who just happens to be built like a silver back gorilla.

You will all see.

That scoreboard is 60 ft closer to homeplate and looks to be 10-20ft shorter.

and,

Montero claimed he wasn't even trying to hit it as hard as he could, just get some good swings in.

I dont think anyone here will even try to argue Wily Mo dropped epic bombs. Again, he hit them over/behind whatever the scoreboard into the trees and probably the river behind the field. Anyways, its just BP, not a huge deal. Ichiro drops epic bombs in BP.

Jesus, Jesus, please cut it loose!
With your moonshots lets hope
You’re not on the juice!
LaPorta could always walk on water,
Pssh screw him, we know you’re hotter!
Make the big club soon, whadya say?
Prospectors are hoping for a huge pay day!
Day in day out on the FCB site,
A new thread starts about your hype.
Don’t let the chromies down or that’ll be the end,
Until Harper comes along and it starts all over again.
