Was looking up these in completeds and noticed a huge difference in the prices of BGS 9 vs PSA 9 Jeter SP rcs

PSA 9s go for around 1k, while the BGS 9 goes for 250-300. What's the reason for this?

The perception in some circles is that PSA is more strict on this card. Also, BGS does openly admit they grade sheet cut cards, and PSA claims they don't, so this leads some to think the PSA card is better. Although, this can be disputed as I am aware of copies that got by PSA graders and have been graded and slabbed by PSA. The guy who done a good amount of this had professional paper cutting equipment at his disposal, and let's just say his submissions are in both slabs. You used to be able to find him at PSA and BGS submission booths at shows.

P.S. The PSA Registry probably adds a little extra perceived value as well.

It's the perceived value
And IMO, the display of sub grades hurts the bgs slab value it brings to a card unless it's graded pristine

i mean, it's commonly believed that the Honus Wagner T206 card once owned by Gretzky / McNall and encased in a PSA slab is trimmed and altered. i don't think any grading company can say they haven't let a few non-manufacturer issued cards into their slabs accidentally.

I think you misunderstood my post. I was suggesting that some of the PSA only homers believe everything in PSA slabs can't possibly be trimmed or sheet cut. Meanwhile, they insist all BGS stuff is 'suspect'. IMO, if a person wants to believe that way they are only fooling themselves is all I am saying. IMO, there are great cards in both companies' slabs, and both have missed stuff as well.

As for the Wagner, it was admitted by Bill Mastro in court that he trimmed the card. There are people who question PSA's involvement with the card as well. Read the links below.

Here is one take on PSA from this site:

Try crossing a bgs 9 Jeter to a PSA 9 and you will understand why ;) PSA is far more strict in grading the 1993 sp foil Manny Ramirez than bgs is, in my experience.

Can someone post the population percentages from each, based on submissions? I have a feeling most of the value difference is because of the populations of the BGS 9 vs. the PSA 9.

I have the BGS numbers:

(BGS 9 - 13.64%) (BGS 9.5 - 1.56%) (BGS 10 - 0%) of 11,729 submitted.

PSA numbers:

(PSA 9 = 4.4%) (PSA 10 = 0.1%) of 10,955 submitted.

I'd be curious to see what a BGS 9 Jeter with all 9 (or better) subs would get if cracked out and submitted to PSA.

Most (if not all) of the BGS 9s that show up on Ebay have 8.5 subs mixed in.

There you have it. 15.2% of the 1993 SP Jeters submitted to BGS get a 9.0 or higher and 4.5% come back a 9 or higher from PSA.

Somewhat similar sample sizes too.

The key to any of it is to buy the card and not the holder. A person can pay stupid prices for a PSA 9 label, or you can find a card just as nice or better in a BGS 9 slab if you know what you are looking for.

I also want to add that if you are looking to cross a BGS 9 to PSA 9, make sure there isn't a subgraded of 8.5 on your BGS 9 or you have a small chance of it crossing to PSA at the same level even if cracking out before being sent it. I think this is an overlooked issue due to BGS's 4 subgrade system that helps PSA pop reports look more strict.
