I was at the 2009 HOF Induction & saw Fisk taking cash for autos on the street. I thought that was classes until I heard it for his charity. Maybe Rice does the same thing.

Willie Mays used to do the same thing, but it was more then two $20s

This is real life people. Jim Rice is in the "HOF".

The HOF part means nothing though....There's plenty of HOF players willing to sign for free.
Most aren't pathetic enough to to really charge as they walk around events. I know ive heard players say that but end up only to be joking around.
This is what bothers me about it. Sure, charge for the auto, whatever. BUT, to be walking off the stage and then come back when someone waves cash is absolutely classless. Either sign or don't, but to so blatantly sell yourself out in front of a room full of people is low budget.

Did he say....... Show Me the Money!!!!!!!!!

Or did the fans want his autograph and willingly pay the $40 to get the autograph?

What kind of ding **** would pay $40 for a Jim Rice autograph?
But I don't see any IP autos on ebay that sell for more than $10. You can get really nice certified Rice autos for $15, extremely nice ones for $30 (which I'm sure you already know.)

Do the guys paying $40 to resell IP autos on ebay really have it figured out?

How awesome would it be if you offered Jim Rice $4.50 for his autograph, because that's the average sale price for his IP stuff. Hand him a 5 and ask for change and tell him if he wants 40 he should have thought about that when he was having a borderline HOF career.
Dammit!! Where's the thanks button?!?

Johnny Bench does the same thing. Some guys just don't like not getting their cut of the sales.

No surprise. One of the biggest tools in Boston sports. Ever see Rice when NESN has him on doing post and pregame for Red Sox games. Guy is worst most boring commentator ever.

Haha, low budget at it's finest. Reminds me of the crap "The Money Store" commercials Phil Rizzuto did all those years. Do these guys really need the money that bad? Isn't this why the better actors only do commercials in other countries?

Rice needs to take a lesson from fellow Red Sox Hall of Famer Bobby Doerr, the most accommodating autograph signer in history.

I love to collect autos and send TTM but I'm not sure that anybody is required to sign anything for anybody. I know that I am biased as a fan and collector of his but why is he being bashed for taking money to sign. Its his prerogative who he wants to sign for and its not like he was turning down kids at this event. According to the blog it was mostly middle age men and somebody else said that most of the the people looking for autos were local dealers.

You guys can call Rice any name you want but I'm sure this kid will disagree with you.

The bashing is because he was making it a point to walk away without signing at all, but turned on a dime when he saw cash.

I listened to the whole interview with Rice and Francessa. Clearly, the author of the OP's story did not. At the very end of the interview, Francessa forgot to mention the charity Rice was associated with, and then Rice got a word in edgewise with him (imagine anybody getting a word in with Francessa - he is an egomaniac) and promoted his charity for which he was soliciting $10 donations.

Based on this, I would think that he was offered the money for his charity and took it in exchange for a couple of autographs.

I'm not a fan at all, but after listening to Francessa badger and bait him about race and his reputation of being a jerk, Rice came off as a halfway decent guy who resisted the oppportunity to play the race card.

But this is the Internet, so anybody can write anything they want and there will always be a bunch of lazy and/or naive folks who will believe anything they read without doing two minutes of due diligence.
