Joe Mauer has a very good chance to win his 4th batting title.
He just passed Mike Trout for second place in the AL.
Mauer is now at .326 to Cabrera's .329.

As Trout has been slumping, Mauer has been smashing.
Mauer is batting .397 in September.
Trout is hitting .256 in September.

Here are the American League players with the most batting titles since 1900:

12-Ty Cobb
7- Rod Carew
6- Ted Williams
5- Wade Boggs
4- Harry Heilmann

It's worth noting, in the National League, Bill Madlock won 4 batting titles, so it's no guarantee for the Hall of Fame.

Big fan of Mauer, it's too bad he's had injury problems throughout his career thus far. Otherwise he may have 1600+ hits at this point in his career at age 29.

I'm rooting for Cabrera to win a triple crown because I think that'd be incredible to get to see for the first time in 45 years, but if not Cabrera, I'd love to see Mauer scoop up another batting title.

Any ideas where the 28 homerun season came from in his MVP year and why he's never been close to that any other year of his career? I've always wondered if there was a logical explanation for that or if it was truly just an outlier.

He's not a power hitter that combines with high average. I think if he tries, the power will come up as the average goes down. Oh, and conveniently or not it was during a free agent year

That would be crazy.

A week or so ago after I read the possible triple crown thread, I checked the ML stat leaders to see if anyone had a shot at the triple slash crown. I was very surprised to see that Mauer is having such a great season, leading the AL in OBP (I think the ML as well, Votto doesn't have enough PA to qualify), and almost no one has mentioned him all season! If he keeps the lead in OBP he will be the only catcher in history to lead the majors in that category twice. I believe the only other catcher to lead the league in OBP is Mickey Cochrane who did it once (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and coincidentally was a very similar hitter to Joe Mauer.

Cochrane: .320/.419/.478 129 OPS+
Mauer: .324/.405/.469 135 OPS+

Both get around 30+ doubles/season, high walk/low K rates, handful of triples a season, each has one 20+ HR season rest are ~10, MVP, etc....

He hit .365 with 28 HR. I'd say that's combining HR and high AVG.

I know, but he tried to translate it into the next season and it didn't work. He said in interviews that he was tryinf to change who he *** to live up to the contract. It wasn't working and he way going to go back to the way he's always approached.

Also without doubt the power numbers would be a bit higher if the twins were still in the dome

Cabrera could be the first back to back winner since Mauer. Also interesting is that including this year 6 out of the last 7 winners are either from the Twins or Tigers.

On that note, I want the twins to win and mauer to beat out miggy for batting champ, but I do not want chicago to make the playoffs and it would be great to see miggy pull off a triple crown. Oh the humanity
