Joe Montana signing - I went!

So I'm torn... On Dec 11th Joe Montana will be in the area doing a signing. The problem is he's charging $149 to sign anything flat and $179 to sign any piece of equipment. Currently the store is selling several autographed items that they've had in stock for quite awhile now. For example, they have a signed mini-helmet for $149, which is what I would get autographed were I to go on the 11th. My questions is whether I should go, or save the $30 and just buy the helmet...

What's it worth to see the guy in person for all of a few seconds?

Me personally, I like meeting the player(s), whether if it's for just a few seconds or even 10-15 seconds. Sometimes I've gone to signings with multiple players where the line gets backed up and I'm standing there talking to one or 2 of the players, so you just never know.

Plus, wouldn't you want to know 1000000% in your mind that the auto is real, the only way to do that is to get it signed in front of you. So unless you saw the other mini signed in front of you, how can you be so sure that it's real?

My logic is it depends on how much you'd like to meet the guy. Before I met Ripken (for free) in person I was planning on going to see him at a signing just to be able to meet him.

I have a signed Jake Locker 8x10 that I bought from the store that I've always had this nagging feeling about. When I look at my UW helmet I had signed by him a few months ago, I don't worry about its authenticity at all. Surely a lifetime of confidence in a piece of my collection is worth the extra $30. Plus, the guy has been my favorite player since I was a kid. Time to start saving I suppose.

I interviewed a guy a year ago that grew up in the same neighborhood as Joe. He went on to be a pro baseball player. The irony is that he pointed out that he was better than Joe at football and Joe was better at baseball.

I'm funny about this I guess. I don't have to meet the player but I will make darn sure I trust the hell out of the source I am buying from. Its the only way I'll even be remotely interested in even looking at a piece let alone buy it.

As for what you should do...unless mini helmets are your thing, I would pony up $80 and buy an authentic NFL football and get him to sign that. I am sorry but if I had to pay $100+ for an auto, I am going for a premium item. Sure a mini is cheap, but like I said, unless you are primarily into mini's, go for something at least worth the money you are spending. Now truth be told, yes its a little lopsided to spend $260 combined total on an autographed football, but it certainly beats the hell out of a mini value wise. Plus if you go full size helmet or a jersey, you are really getting lopsided then.

On the flip side, mini's are cool as well and if you prefer them, then I'd pay the extra money and not worry a wink about it. The extra $30 for that is well worth it. If it was a so so player then I'd not care. But someone of that ilk, why take a chance?

Either get a premium item signed OR what i prefer, get a phot (pose you cant find signed anywhere else) or some kind of unique item that you never see. Ex- signed SB ticket stubs

I have a 16x20 i want to get him and Rice on. I think it will be fun to get them done each at signings.

A full size helmet would be great. The unfortunate part is that I'm limited for space, so minis have been my thing as they fit the best. However, if I were to find an amazing deal on a full size, I certainly wouldn't turn it down. Anyone know of any places to find a good full size for cheap? and should I go authentic or replica throwback?

You could go to J.C. Penney's website and go under fan shop. Then they have replica helmets that are full size. Run about $109 plus shipping but right now...everything over $50 is free shipping with their promo code. Plus you could use a credit card so it would take the sting out of having to come up with the money all at once in addition to the signing fee for Montana.

I prefer to do this with guys I have stuff of already. Take Lance Berkman for instance. I had him on a ball, a bat, a regular astros mini, and plenty of cards as well as photos. So I opted to get him to sign a Rice mini helmet. You don't see many of those signed let alone even see many Rice baseball helmets unsigned to begin with. And needless to say, I was the only person in line that day out of over 300 people who had one. Or at least that I saw anyways. Reason being there is like only one Academy store around here that even sells them and supply was limited as it was.

I also plan to get Michael Bourn on a UH mini helmet as well. How many of those has anyone seen?

But...on the other hand, if you are getting a star athlete to sign something for the first time and you have a choice, go with the best item you can. I got Berkman on a bat and then a ball respectively. I don't do full size helmets or jersey's so these were the best two I could think of to get him to sign. I would rather save the oddball stuff for later as I like to keep my auto collection pretty typical and oraginized. I have seen too many people do all sorts of oddball items as their only item. Pretty soon you have an amalgam of hats, mini's, posters, cards, bats, balls, cleats, and other stuff signed and it doesn't always display well and when you do display it, it really looks and feels all over the page as it were. I have never been really fond of that. To each their own I guess.

That's actually not all that bad, as I pay $80 for a full size replica from my buddy who owns a card shop.

I also do what Big Mac and Predator do, I look for a unique item to get signed. Back in '07 I got a high school mini helmet signed by Heath Miller, and when he signed it he said it's the only one he's ever signed and that he never even saw a mini helmet of his high school before. About a year and a half later he did another signing and I told him that I was the person with his high school mini, he remembered it and said it was still the only one he had ever signed.

Well, I splurged and went with an authentic 49er's throwback helmet, rather than a replica. I managed to find one on ebay for a decent price. I figure since this will be the centerpiece of my collection, why not go for the best? While my holiday bonus is right around the corner I'll still blame you guys when I'm poor...

Well, I splurged and went with an authentic 49er's throwback helmet, rather than I replica. I managed to find one on ebay for a decent price. I figure since this will be the centerpiece of my collection, why not go for the best? While my holiday bonus is right around the corner I'll still blame you guys when I'm poor...

I only buy autograph at shows if they let me take a picture with player. Find out if they will let you take a picture with him. You can always buy Montana autograph anywhere but how often can you get a picture with a player
