Do you watch yankees baseball? Hughes has lost some of his velocity but the reason he was picked as the starter is because of the development of his change up. The guy has a McNasty curve ball and even if his fastball is only 92-94 when he goes and throws a 79 mph change hes going to make hitters look stupid.

Dont like it at all...

I just do not think Hughes has the stuff to be a MLB starter. On paper it looks good, but aside from a few moments of quality, he just has not been able to produce at the MLB level, and I do not see this changing. Unless ofcourse they are satisfied with a 8-15, 5.00+ era type pitcher. Hughes belongs in a pen, or on a team that is desperate for pitching.

FWIW, Hughes' Avg Fastball velocity last year was 93.7 MPH, good for 16th in the majors among pitchers with 80+ IP. Ubaldo Jimenez (96.1mph) and Justin Verlander (95.6mph) top the list.

While this is true....he was "clocked" in the minors throwing 98 mph back in the day. Thats what I meant by loss in velocity.

Hughes will be mostly 90-92 as a starter and that is certainly good enough to get it done when you couple it with a good curve and decent changeup. He will be fine as the fifth starter if given the chance to go through the normal ups and downs of a young pitcher.

True. I was hoping they would continue to waste him in the 7th inning, but they smartened up.

I went looking for this post but couldn't find it. I knew i posted something about him being 10-2 by the allstar break. I guess the only mistake i made is that he probably won't lose two games You've been thanked !!!!

I am cracking up too John. I was one of the most heavily invested in Hughes, Sold most off but still have some nice 9.5's in waiting too.
