Interesting move and possibly a good one, depending on the price. The Royals still aren't quite ready to contend and Soria has lost a little off his fastball (at least when I've seen him lately) so KC should probably try to move him for younger pitching.

The fact that KC hasn't moved Soria up to this point is pure bonkers. What the hell does a crap team need with an elite(ish) closer? Those are exactly the types of players teams like KC need to be trading.

Broxton's a good deal on a one-year term. If he has rebounded, you've got a great reliever at a bargain and can trade him at the deadline. If he doesn't rebound, no sweat.

Where can Soria move up to? A stater since he is their closer though.
Royals general manager Dayton Moore said he'll be used in a setup role for closer Joakim Soria, solidifying what had been one of the big leagues' youngest bullpens.

If true, it looks like Moore looked at the 2011 Rangers and saw a team be very successful with big time bats, an adequate rotation, and a lights out bullpen and has decided to try and copy that on a smaller scale.

Rumors are that the Royals are interested in Colby Rasmus as well. Lots of scenerios can play out. Toronto had interest in Soria in the past, so I can see the Royals either:

  • A. Trading Soria for Rasmus and a prospect.
    B. Moving Soria to the Rotation.
    C. Keeping Soria where he is, hoping he improves over last year, and having a kick @ss bullpen.

Royals are also wanting to add a starter, so with the possible addition of Rasmus and the fact that Atlanta is interested in Lorenzo Cain, I can see some dealing go on there.

Fun year to be a Royals fan.

Trade. The fact they haven't dealt Soria is nuts.

Improving the bullpen has shown lately to be one of the cheapest ways to quickly improve a team but its really hit or miss. Have to give the Royals credit for trying. Giving 9 million to Bruce Chen.... :?

Thanks to whatever gods there may be for someone taking Broxton's sorry ass off of the Dodgers hands. I hated whenever he would come into the game because no lead was enough. That POS would always give the other team runs or at least put them into position to score either the tying or winning runs. He sucks and good riddance.

I like this move. Cheap sign, and it helps their pen.

I keep telling people the Royals are going to be a good team in the very near future. They have one of the best young infields in the game. They have a great defense in general, with a pretty good offense. As a Tigers fan I am starting to take them more seriously.

I'm not going to sit here and defend Bruce Chen's career but he has gone 24-15 with an ERA under 4 the past two years for the Royals. He changed his arm angle and it appears to be working for him.

In today's market I would pay a SP 4.5 million per year for those #'s anytime.

Broxton was one of the best relievers in baseball for 3-4 years. Hard throwing relievers usually have short shelf-lives, and Brox is no different. I hope he rebounds, because he can be absolutely dominant.

as a Dodgers fan, I'm overjoyed to see him go. As Rickzcards said, no lead was safe with him the last couple years. He was never the same after Matt Stairs punked his ass in 2008. He was so scared of Stairs in the '09 NLCS that he walked him on four pitches. Yeah, the same Matt Stairs that played for damn near half the teams in MLB. My gut would churn every time Torre trotted him out there.
