Josh Johnson agrees with Padres
Updated: November 19, 2013, 11:20 PM ET
By Jerry Crasnick | ESPN.com

Free-agent starter Josh Johnson has reached agreement on a one-year, guaranteed $8 million contract with the San Diego Padres, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

The deal includes additional performance bonuses based on games started, the source said. Johnson was in San Diego for a physical exam Tuesday and the contract is expected to be announced by the club Wednesday.

Johnson, 29, is 58-45 with a 3.40 ERA in parts of nine seasons with the Miami Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays. He went 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in a disappointing, injury-plagued 2013 season with Toronto, and had been looking for a short-term deal to re-establish himself before going back on the open market next winter.

Johnson did not receive a qualifying offer from Toronto, so the Padres will not have to give up a draft pick in exchange for signing him.

The San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals are among the other big league teams that expressed interest in Johnson. The pitcher had targeted the Padres and Giants as his top two choices and turned down bigger one-year offers to sign with San Diego, said a source.

Johnson will join Ian Kennedy, Andrew Cashner, Eric Stults and Tyson Ross in San Diego's projected 2014 rotation, with Joe Wieland, Cory Luebke and Robbie Erlin also in the mix.

I think it's a smart move to sign with SD for the year, seeing as how he is looking to rebound and sign a new deal next year. Petco is a pitcher's park for real.

If there's one park that could get him back on track its Petco. Not only the park, but its surely better playing early-April games in San Diego vs. Toronto....

Too bad he didn't work out in Toronto. Maybe going back to the NL will help him get back on track.

J.J. remains the only Blue Jays player that a local fan gear shop put on clearance while he was still on the active roster. They couldn't give away his jerseys. A dubious distinction indeed.

I really liked the acquisition of J.J. But even when he was healthy he was horrible. I hope he turns it around but I figure that he is done.

If I was the GM I go after heavy speed. Everyone knows Petco is a power sapping park. Speedy guys might be more willing to sign. Plus, why not play up to your park factors.
