Howard is a streaky hitter, but is consistent at striking out.

Philly fans hype the wrong players. ::facepalm::

I understand the hate for Kevin, but do you not agree that Howard should not be hyped?

He's had a couple of pretty good years so far. And having another one. I think this kid just might work out for us phillies fans.

Trying to figure out who are more obnoxious, Philly fans or Red Sox fans.

BTW, Howard DOES strikeout much too often to be considered an MVP candidate.

Answer the question= why should he not be hyped?

ROY, NL MVP, core member of a WS Championship, 260 homers.....

"Do you not agree that Howard should not be hyped?" Are you intending to make an argument that we should not be hyping Howard? I am guessing that was the opposite of the point you were intending to make.

Howard is fine when viewed by the old fashioned counting numbers (though he seems to be on the wrong side of his peak even in regard to those overused/overrated statistics), but there is more to the story. He is an average fielding first baseman at best. He strikes out far too often leading to a lackluster OBP. His contract is going to be an albatross for the franchise.

The positives: He does have so much talent around him that pitchers are forced to go at him. He won't have to face four of the best pitchers in the NL (his teammates) for at least a few years. The struggles of other aging sluggers have given (and will continue to give) analysts something to distract them from his decline. It also helps that there are an increasing number of terrible contracts that make his contract not look quite as bad.

I guess I will stop here as what I am writing has already been said dozens of times. I like to see great stories and great accomplishments. I would love to see Howard put up monster numbers for many years to come. I just think signs point to that being an unlikely outcome.

Jesus. This guy has people actually slighting a player who averages 102 runs, 167 hits, 30 doubles, 46 homeruns and 139 RBIs per-162 games with a .371 career OBP and a .940 career OPS. It's one thing to dislike the guy because of this poster who ***** his horn and is obnoxious, it's another to be willfully ignorant of a great player based on ONE stat, his strikeouts. Wake up. Howard is one of the premiere hitters in the game of baseball.

Your missing my point (aside, that contract will not be a future albatross as the Phillies are not a particularly a cash poor franchise.)

My point is there no matter what the the future is, Howard has won two of the three finest personal awards there is in baseball. Cy Young is obviously out of his reach.

He is the cleanup hitter for a team that is not only currently in first place, but has won four straight division titles, three straight NLCS appearances, two straight world series appearances and a WS title.

If he never swings a bat again, he already earned his "hype." He has accomplished what 99.99999999% of players that reach the majors have not or never will.

I think you guys concentrate too much on Kevin's terrible boarding and project too much on Howard.

Howard WAS one of the league's most valuable power hitters. It is funny that you list all of those averages because it feeds directly into my point. Howard has played the past two seasons and the small sampling of this season well below those averages. That may tell us a few things: 1. Pitchers have figured out that he can't lay off bad pitches so pitching him out of the zone is the gameplan. 2. That he is on the downside of his peak. 3. That a big part of Howard's success is based on the quality of talent around him. With Utley and Rollins either missing large parts of the past couple seasons or playing below their ability (due to injury) it has exposed Howard moreso than in the past.

When you look at advanced metrics such as both dWAR and oWAR we see that even at his best (his incredible 58 homer/.313 ba./.425 OBP season) Howard only managed 5.8 (W)ins (A)bove (R)eplacement. That is nice, but not an especially elite number. Other than that season, Howard has steadily hovered at or below a WAR of 3. That doesn't even put him in the top 5 at his position in his own league. The guy is the epitome of the hype outweighing the reality. Then throw in his replacemenr level (at its peak) defense and you have a nice player, but by no means elite.

People who think Howard is elite are indirectly responsible for band box parks, live balls, and prolific steroid use. Those people overvalue the homerun and are often the same people who think that just because Jeter is a pasta diver that he is a great defensive player. All flash and no substance.
