Just bought my most expensive "modern day" card

Have spent much more on vintage, but this is a record for me for modern day...of course I still haven't bought my pujols chrome yet though...

May have overpaid, as I had one bidder pushed me at the end to my MAX..ouch...oh well, I guess I will HAVE to hold on to this one for awhile

Holy crap..........the same card(graded psa 9) didnt sell for $99.00.....$1,000 more for one grade higher?

Incredible card but I didnt realize a 10 carried that much of a premium.

BGS 9.5 sold for 1050.

Yea, besides the PUJOLS chrome auto, I can't think of a more important modern day card...at least in my mind. People can spend thousands on a prospect that will go - poof - in a few years...i think I can rationalize this one.

I always liked that Griffey card. I never had the Tiffany version, but I remember opening the regular packs 20 years ago...I remember it being annoying that they were larger sized, and a pain to store.

There is just something so simple about that design, and it's my favorite Griffey rookie.

1989 Upper Deck Griffey is way more iconic than the Tiffany. The Tiffany is a sick card and sells a lot more than the UD, but there is no way it is more "important."

the "refractor" of that era...well not exactly...it just shines. It has a gloss to it.
They were made for the collector/investor and were printed in smaller print runs. I believe these were limited to 5000, but this particular card is very hard to find centred. (e.g. only 29 psa 10s of nearly 1000 graded).

I guess it depends on your definition of important. The UD, I agree is more ICONIC, but to registry collectors it means nothing, as they are a dime a dozen in comparison.

Is an important card. UpperDeck may have started the premium on card stock. But 1989 marked the return of Bowman. And we all prospect investor known this is the brand that we get all our key rookie card. :mrgreen:

My 2 cents; The card is nearly impossible to find with perfect centering. Coming straight out of recently busted factory sets (last 10+ years or so when grading took off) the condition is hardly ever a problem. This should be the only noticeable flaw. I had a PSA 9 back in the day and it was perfect all around except the obvious centering.

Registry collectors...People with deep pockets dont want 9s. To the hobbyist, a 9 would be fine, but to the investor, it's all about the grade. You of all people should know that.

We all know from one grader to the next you can have a 9 that looks better than a 10....I don't really think this is a new concept to you.
