You shouldn't give it ALL up... keep some stuff for sentimental value. I am in a similar type situation, as my wife and I are expecting in early August! Unless I come up with more money, I will probably be dropping from buying a case of chrome and a case of draft every year (plus a box or two here and there of other stuff) to probably two boxes of chrome and two boxes of draft, and I will most likely sell a lot of $5-$15 cards to fund those purchases.

For me I decided the way to go was get rid of (basically) everything. I would not be surprised if one day I come back one day, but for now I think it was the way for me to go. (I did keep a few Carl Crawford TT Auto BGS 9.5's for sentimental value come to think of it, but beyond that...)

There's a Carew 2000 GOTG, but beyond that not much. He is listing my items in a couple of shots so there will be a 2000 Santana Finest Gold Ref BGS 9.5 at some point in time (if you consider him a Twin...)

I do... and thats exactly what I was wondering about. :)

Just went through this myself. Moved, bought a house, wife staying home with the kids; More going out, less coming in.
My collection wasnt big by any means, but I got rid of ~75% of the best stuff. It was actually nice to be forcibly focused. Seeing the loss I took on alot of stuff has seen more be much more picky on the items I am able to pick up; stuff I will enjoy and that are much more likely to hold some value.

Loved your postings of the past few years.
Sorry to see you getting out of the game, but hopefully it's the right choice for you.
I agree. He always had thought-provoking and well-written posts and threads. Definitely one of the board's best members over the years. Good luck, Topnotchy.

I really appreciate that guys. Good news is that even though the cards are going, I'm not planning on running away all too soon. Too many great guys here, and I still like shooting the breeze about baseball and cardboard.

Happy Passover everyone. Watching the last couple hours of the bulk of your collection end in auction is nerve wrecking... (Nerve wrecking enough to be forgiven for posting thinly veiled spam I hope :). )

Ricks listings do well!

Yah Probstein is one of the biggest sellers out there so I'm cautiously optimistic. Some of the bigger cards are really a ways away from what I thought they would go for (or what I paid). Snipes are great but yeesh they can make you nervous (if they will turn out as hoped)

So how'd you do?

Thanks for asking.

It's kind of hard to tell but here's some takeaways:

The Ugly:
2000 APOH 3000 Club Willie Mays Auto $1752 - I paid $2250 for this and was not expecting to lose on it.
2000 APOH 3000 Club Hank Aaron Auto $810 - Had an offer of $1400 that I turned down because I was expecting more for it. Probably the most disappointing/surprising price. I was hoping for close to $2000 and thought I was reasonable in assuming so.
Timing - With some players who I had large quantities of, I knew I was taking a risk. Sold a lot of Lester and Tulo stuff that could easily be 50% more in a few weeks from now. Pretty poor time to be selling Teixeira or Hanley. I knew this going in and felt like the best thing for me was to unload all at once, so that's the price I had to pay...

Neutral:
For most items the price point was about what I would have expected. Some nice cards went a little lower than expected, while some others went a bit higher

The Good:
Recently picked up a Jackie Robinson Cut Auto. It was tough to part with, but I was able to get $1600 for it. Gorgeous card, but I think the movie release probably helped.
2003 Donruss Elite Ryan Howard RC Auto /100 - Picked it up for $200 a while back and was hoping to get $100 out of it. Card sold for over $300. No clue what the market is on it since it is a rare piece, but I was very pleased.

Biggest Surprise - Brandon Webb. Had 2 RC Auto's that I assumed would get $5-$10 if I was lucky. They went for about $50 apiece. Both were nicer RC Auto's, but I was shocked at how strong his following is.

The next phase of listings will hit eBay in a week or so, after Passover ends...

I appreciate that. The Jackie sale helped and I guess that's how it goes... Some do better than expected others worse...

Having all that stuff come up at once probably hurt. People interested in the 3000 Club autos might be able to go deep on one or the other, but not both on the same night, so bids were probably divided.
