Is any and every card at least a PSA 1? At some level don't they just say "authentic"?

I have an Andre Dawson card that is labeled Authentic because according to Beckett (I believe it is a Beckett graded card, could be PSA) it has been altered

Ok I will put it this way. I would pay a fair price for it. I would have it graded hoping it would come back authentic just so I could add it to my collection!

I did basically the same thing with my Jordan RC when I was younger.

And I don't know if this is relevant but in 1996 I got $100 in person from a dealer for it...

It strikes me as significant that your Jordan rookie is on a "World Problems" folder. The world does have problems, including why one man who can put a ball through a hoop has made billions for such a skill and is the object of such adoration, while school teachers and children in Africa and global warming and the Middle East and Obamacare and blahblahablah.

Yesterday I dropped off what amounted to 1/2 million cards, based on the boxes I gave them. A little bittersweet, but it was just too much, and they have just sat there for a long, long time. Bittersweet because I am happy to give them to the Goodwill, thinking they'll end up on he hands of some grateful kids, but afraid that they'll get picked through by employees. I started going through all the crap and pulling out Griffey, Ripken, Jeter, etc, but I gave up. Not worth the time, for me. I pulled what amounted to 5 monster boxes of "stuff", mainly insert type cards, and promos, and such. I did find a couple Mariano Bowman rookies, a couple Ortiz Fleer rookies, but I didn't really go through much base. I save a dozen boxes of commons just because: my 70's, 1992 bowman, 1989 UD, 89 Score football, stuff that "used" to mean something. Next step is to get around to scanning all the stuff I saved, and get it in the hands of collectors!

how much can you realistically claim on taxes for donating that much?

$500...
*edit* sorry, misread your question! I claimed $500, once you go over $500, I believe if takes a lot more itemization? Not exactly sure, but just wanted to make it easy, and the $500 was the easiest.

There are many better places to donate items - Salvation Army is my best . Look into Goodwill's money - managers/ owners make a lot for themselves .

Congratulations, I actually did this a couple of years ago and haven't regretted it one bit, I don't know if it was half a million cards but it was a bunch. I went through a lot of it but by the end I wasn't looking through stuff quite as closely. Good luck selling all the stuff you've pulled hopefully you can find some nice gywnn's to fill up your newly found space.

While I cannot confirm or deny these charges, I will say that the Goodwill I dropped these off are near a school I used to teach at, and I know for a fact that it is an important part (the most important part?) of the community. I did not randomly pick a place on a map. I agree, though, that nonprofit agencies should be very transparent in where their money goes / comes from. While it wouldn't have affected my decision this time, I would like to know more about the Salvation Army. Thanks!

I don't even know where to start... This is just an example 9 cards out of a random group of 30 cards I pulled from one box:
