I say anything that gets kids away from a computer/tv screen and gets them interacting face to face is a good thing, regardless of impact on the hobby. I think the key to this game that could make it fun for kids is that it can be fairly fast paced.

Too Funny -
Jay's youtube debut.

I'll post my ATL Card Show experience later.
Good times; just wished I wasn't rushed by a sick child.
Take care, all.

Topps MLB SportsClix was a much better idea.

SportsClix was a game that anyone could get into, not just 7 year olds.

This just seems like a game that would get old quick. Their just isn't anything to it.

Boy, I disagree! I feel Topps Attax wil be just as fun and exciting as the amazing game ALL the cool kids are playing: MLB Showdown!
Could Topps Attax ever be as great as that????

Can't speak for sportsclix but as far as topps attax goes, I couldn't agree more. This game is so random and sloppy that while it may be enjoyed by small children, its not likely to get them into collecting cards or baseball. The reason Yughio and pokemon and magic the gathering are so popular is they require strategy. And even the most common cards, played correctly, can win a game. That is why kids enjoy them. I have never, nor have I known anyone who has, enjoyed a game that required no strategy. About the closest I have seen people get to liking a game with no strategy is slot machines. And there are supposedly even strategies to those.

A while back we had a disscusion about how a CCG for sports that used strategy would be better. I think the only question left unanswered was whether or not an actual strategic game could be made. I think it could.

Make the rule that you can only have a team worth of cards. One player for each position and a few utility players. Then create card abilities based on the player on the card. Say for instance, we all know Pujols or Ryan Howard are dangerous hitters. Create abilities for the card that gives the opposing player the ability to walk him. Instead of automatically scoring, how about we have a regular baseball diamond with three bases and a home plate. Be able to steal bases. It would have to be played with dice of course to keep anything from being a predetermined outcome. But with a guy like Michael Bourn or Crawford, make it the ability of the card to have a higher chance to steal bases. Say you use 2 6 sided dice(which I couldn't see anyone wanting or needing anything bigger). With Bourn or Crawford, you could say...roll anything higher than a 2 and you steal successfully.

For a dangerous hitter like Pujols...if you choose to walk him...add something in to negate the adavantage of doing so. Say player A chooses to walk Pujols instead of pitching to him. The next batter up is Ryan Braun. Now say player A chooses to pitch a fastball to Braun. Say (hypothetically of course)he was a bad fastball hitter. Say you had to roll a 8 or higher to get the hit on a fastball with each next higher number equaling an extra base (8 equals single, 9 equals double, 10 equals triple, 11 or 12 equals a homer). Now, since player a had the advantage to walk Pujols, to negate that ability, now if you roll anything over a 6 then Braun gets a hit.

You could even, if you really wanted to drag it out that long, do it with pitches. I think you should be able to throw the kind of pitch you want but you could narrow it down to location factors. I think if they do do this it should be optional. that way you can have a really long game or a shorter one depending on whether or not you want to use pitch location rules and abilites(hell...if you are using Lidge against Pujols location wouldn't matter anyways! ::facepalm::  ). Say you want to paint the outside of the plater with a slider. You can throw the slider. But say you have to roll one 6 sided die to determine if it hits where you want it to or not. Roll a 3 or higher and it does. roll a 1 or a 2 and it does not. With the batter, you could do the same.

It would be an incredibly long game but it would be fun as hell and player selection for your team would really come into play since you would really want to cover your arse in many ways. Speed, defense, offense, pitching etc. And with this type of game, players real on the field abilities could be emulated on the cards. And like I said, they could dumb it up enough to where if you didn't want to roll for every single aspect of every play, you wouldn't have to.

So...while I enjoyed the video...the game leaves much to be desired. Figure a way to get strategy involved and then I think you would see more attention paid to it. I am not sure how showdown worked. It may be just like what I typed above. But I have never played it so I couldn't tell you. All I am saying is there has to be a way for it to be fun and involve some thought process without having to deal with a lot of crap. It doesn't need to be like playing a 20 year D&D adventure. But it could be pretty cool if it took a little more thought.
