It surprised me to see that Mickey Mantle has no releases in 2013 Topps. There is no #7 base, and he has no inserts. Mantle in the base Topps product has been a guarantee since 2006. He was also left out of the 2012 Topps Chrome set.

As a Mantle collector, I wonder why?

They retired the #7 card this year. Not sure why, but that is what Chris Olds stated on that box break video.

Having a Mickey Mantle card be #7 in the base Topps checklist each year is, in my opinion, stupid.

Having a Mickey Mantle card be #7 OR skipping card #7 in the base Topps checklist each year is, in my opinion, stupid.

I like the mantle 7. I think Ruth 3, Williams 9, Robinson 42, and the like would be a great way to make the sets fun again. Make them like 1 a box and put the chase back into the hobby.

How do you leave out mays, aaron, etc and more recent Icons???
Where do they draw the line?

Forget mantle, I want to know where the Strasburg and Headley base cards are?

Mantle collectors have liked them in the recent base sets, but frankly I'd prefer to have the card given to a player who wouldn't have had a card in the set.

Retiring the # is stupid.

Agreed. Probably even more annoying for people with OCD. I was okay with Mantle in every set (even though it became old and the pictures looked worse with each set) but skipping #7 every year now? Really dumb.

however, in part with what clint said, I loved the retired SP's that shared a regular # with a current player. I think it would be cool to have absolute LEGENDS - the greatest of the game that had prominent jersey #'s - make them part of the set each year and a SSP.

Topps should create the "Mickey Mantle Award" given to the MLB Player of the Year, as selected by Topps. Card #7 commemorates that player, and on the back provides a brief description of the award, why the player won the award, and who Mantle was as a player and hobby icon on the back of the card. Have an SP version that has Mantle and the award winner photoshopped on the same card.

Mickey Mantle was a great player but I do have to admit when Topps took over the rights to his name they flooded the market with his cards and I got sick of seeing him everywhere.

Skipping #7 isn't anything new. I think they've been doing in since the mid 90's.
