Why? No one cares when schools fire coaches after one year. Why should a coach be chastised for leaving after one year, especially for his "dream job?" I understand about the recruits and everything but it's a 2 way street.
It has more to do with the situation as a whole. With Lane Kiffin came a lot of heat. A ton of fans, players, boosters, and other people affiliated to the football program stood up for this guy. They defended him after he did moronic thing after moronic thing, and now he has turned his back on a large insitution that was prepared to embrace him.
Would you feel the same way if they fired him?
It depends on reasons for the firing. If a coach was ineffective then he should get fired. If a coach slaps a player, then he should get fired.
I disapprove of programs firing head coaches who have done the program good, but did not live up to expectations because they were unrealistic ones for the school to set in the first place.
I know where you are going with this. The next question is to ask me if I would leave my job for a better one. The answer to that question is yes. However I didn't convince 2 recruiting classes of high school seniors and their parents to come to a school on the basis of me being there.
I didn't stand up in front of hundreds of thousands of fans and talk about singing rocky top all night long. I didn't pretend to be interested in something that my heart obviously wasn't in. I didn't put on a show to deceive a bunch of high school kids.
That is all Lane Kiffin's deal.
No, I wasn't going there and I don't buy the recruiting class excuse. Whether a coach coaches at a school for 1 year or 30 years he will ALWAYS be leaving a recruiting class behind. A coach will always be making promises and selling a school to a bunch of kids that he will leave behind no matter how long he has coached there.
