Went to see the Portland (Red Sox AA) Harrisburg (Nationals AA) game tonight. I would say that Lars was definitely the most noteworthy player there (Joel Guzman was on Harrisburg, hit HR, hitting over .300 with 11 HRs).

So I have gotten past the age (19 now) where I would feel comfortable asking players for autographs before the game just to "reserve" a potential broken bat. I used to get a cheap ball and have them all sign and use this line while they were signing "Could I please have your bat if you break it?" They pretty much all said yes except for Brian Buscher (was with Giants then, Minnesota now) that I can remember. Oh, another was Mike Jacobs before he played in the Majors with New York at all.

Anyway I don't do that anymore but tonight I was sitting right next to Portland's dugout, and figured if someone cracked one I might as well ask for it after the game.

No one breaks one on Portland (Guzman did for Harrisburg but I am sure someone would be over there trying to get it) through 8 innings but sure enough Lars comes up and cracks one in the 9th. Game ends and he walks over to opposite end of dugout of where I am (even though locker is on my end). I think he had family there and was hugging and whatnot. So, I was waiting by the rail where he would have to walk by to get to the dugout, but there was like 4 other kids around my age that came over inevitably trying to get the bat. I had the best position but he had been over on the other side for awhile and I didn't feel like fighting for it with 4 other people.

I decided to go to the other side where he was and ask him...

"Lars, can I please have the bat you cracked?"

"No, sorry."

I then get out a new OMLB and figure I should at least get that signed. He takes someone elses pen (which always makes me nervous that it's some gel pen or something) and starts to sign it despite me holding out my pen. Luckily the one he had was a good black pen that works well.

"Could you sign it on the sweet spot please?"

"What's your name?"

"Jon" (I almost said don't personalize it but I didn't want him to think I was going to sell it-which im not-so I just said my name)

He wrote "To John" on the side panel and signed it perfectly on the sweet spot with his number. Actually looks really sharp, despite having spelled my name wrong (through no fault of his own).

I then said "Can I buy the bat from you?"

He thought for a second then smiled and said "Nah man"

I said "Do you know Billy Rowell (I pronounced it Roe ell)?"

He said "You mean Rowell (rau ell)?"

"Yea, he always offers to sell game bats"

Then he again said "I don't want to sell it."

In a last ditch effort I said "Alright, great, ill take it for free then."

He laughed and of course said no.

Before I am berated for my attempts, I have gotten many, many game bats and autographs by just being persistent, so I am not much worried about how you will reply with "Omg dude just leave him alone." If he wanted to be left alone he can make himself scarce. Hopefully this will cut down on the replies of the self-righteous that make up a large portion of this board.

That is a good post man. It was informative, it told a story, and most importantly, it was backed by logic or humor.

Here is the thing with Lars. The guy is the craziest player I have ever been around. I have gotten his auto many times and he has very traumatic mood swings. You are lucky he was that nice to you. Some of the bat companies do not allow players to give bats away. They buy it back and they may new ones for a cheaper costs. This source was from a clubhouse manager in Trenton. At least you tried anyway lol. Try to be a little nicer, or you will not stick around to long man. :?

I was at the Eastern Lg All Star game 2 weeks ago & they had a free autograph session. Lars was very rude. Everyone was trying to get Tazawa & I guest he was getting annoyed? I tried to get him before that & he always had a wise comment to make.

Best regards!

Damn....I hate to try to defend what seems really crappy to you and I'm sure most people reading but I have to at least throw this out there. I used to work in the Minors for the Red Sox and had many jobs. One was asst. to the clubhouse manager so I am honestly telling you this happens. When a player breaks a bat, damages a batting helmet, rips his jersey, tears his pants anything at all really that needs to be replaced, they need to bring it into the clubhouse and show it to the "clubbie". They will not allow you to get a new item unless you show its really damaged. I had a player come up to me in the clubhouse and say he needed a new pair of pants because the seam tore sliding during a game. Come to find out he had the pants in his bag and because a stain wasnt coming out he simply wanted a new pair and I wasnt allowed to give him a set as no actual damage was there. Another player wanted a pair of socks but there was no damage he just threw them out and was fined for it. The policy in the clubhouse was always, "you want something new, bring us the old and show its unusable". This same thing worked with bats. We had a huge wooden shed type locker that held all the bats for the team. Every weight, color, model, brand anything a player would want or had ordered to use during the season. If they broke a bat they had to bring the broken one to get a new one. If a guy just wanted a new bat when the one he had was alright he wasnt allowed a new one. Maybe its just how the Red Sox do it but I know we took the broken bat, made a note in the inventory that we gave a new one, the name of the player, bat specs., and so on. The broken bat was then immediately taken to the proshop and sold. Employees are not even allowed to toss balls to fans and only players could do that. I remember learning that the hard way when I gave a foul ball to a fan and got lambasted by the GM. The foul balls are taken into the batting cages, marked with a "BP" and used as practice balls. I wont say this is definately how things work for him in Portland but I will say that there is the possibility that he wouldnt get a new bat unless he showed the broken bat to the CHM and proved it was indeed broken. I know a lot of players didnt like the way that was and usually went against it anyways and handed their stuff out if it broke, tore or anything else but believe me it came out of their checks (not that a bat would cost that much for a guy maiing the money hes getting but its a lot to some guys). Not fully sticking up for the guy just saying that theres certain situations where their hands are tied and the bat has to be sold if it breaks or they will get fined. Sorry to make such a long post, I just remember going to the games before I worked there and saying "why the hell wont they just toss those balls sitting on the ground up to the fans??".

I think I know why he was nice to me...his family was there, seemed like grandparents. I was standing next to the people he was hugging while he signed, I doubt he would be anything but nice with them there.
