A few little things flying around:

-Austin Hyatt may have been scratched from his start
-Rays scout in Lakewood tonight although that makes little sense unless the phillies will be adding something to Werth for a package....

Oswalt possibly would veto a trade to the phillies which would make me happy.

Why would Oswalt not going to Philly make you happy?

Speaking of which, the rumors I've heard have Happ going to Houston with spare parts straight up for Oswalt, no Werth included.

We're going to make Ed Wade our bitch again.

Jeff, I think that part of the concern on the Oswalt deal is how much of the A/AA players we would have to give up. You can only pilfer the system to much before it dries out. I think many fear that RAJ has the ability to dangle someone like Singleton as part of any potential deal and at the end of the day a lot of fans knowledgable of the Phillies minor league system would rather keep the current crop of A/AA prospects than dump them for a possible Oswalt rental.

1. Rental is 2 1/2 years.

2. All of the reports have indicate that Rube will absolutely not part with Dom Brown or Jon Singleton.

3. We replenished the system with the Lee trade. Aumont, JC Ramirez, and Gillies rule. :(

I agree on all points, just trying to play devil's advocate. I think that my bigger concern is the Werth trade and bringing up Dom this year with the expectations of a pennant race. Actually, I'm lying, my biggest concern is the two-month phenom from 2009 currently in left field, I think that The Albatross and Exxon should have a steel cage match or something, it'd be more entertaining than watching them try to play baseball. And someone tell Victorino that he's not a home run machine and stop swinging for the fences.

How is Oswalt's age a problem? He's 32 - the same age Halladay was when you got him

He wants his 2012 option for 16 million picked up and at that age, its a risk...

He's only a few years older than Blanton who we signed for 3 years and he's younger than Halladay.

If we could bundle Raul and Baez in some sort of deal, I'd be thrilled.

I would really like to see a Werth for BJ Upton straight up. Both right handed bats with power potential when they are on their games. I really think a change of scenery would be beneficial for both players. The Phils would probably have to throw in another prospect though.

uh... no. Upton has written his ticket out of here. I don't think the Phils would do it straight up. Further, there's nowhere for him to play.

The Phillies are probably going to throw in Matt Rizzotti on the deal to Houston. Berkman wants out also so they will need a 1st baseman. Matt is only good for 1st and DH. No chance of him ever being a Phillie unless Howard goes down to injury.

Has it gotten so bad in the bullpen that the old dog would rather Joe Blanton bat in the top of the 8th
with the bases loaded down one run rather than one of our stellar guys off the bench? Blanton finally
has a decent start but is just not meant to pitch longer than 6 or 7 then gets blown up. Cmon Chuck.

Plus he'd rather have Blanton come in and strike out than put in Exxon to ground out. At this point it shouldn't matter if it's righty vs lefty or whatever, just put a warm body that can swing a bat out there. One of these days Sarge is going to come down out of the booth and show 'em all how it's done.

Roy Oswalt ending up in Philly was discussed on our local (Houston) sports radio this afternoon as well.

Saw 2 Devil Rays scouts at the Blue Claws game tonite, playing Charleston (Yankee affiliates), only scouting Blue Claws players. They seemed excited about Jawan james and the shortstop Villa.

Oswalt is very overrated imo. With his contract and his age, I am glad my Tigers are staying away. I would not give up one top prospect or player.

Actually, the Tigers were looking at Oswalt too. But he said he would block all trades to Detroit. So that's why they aren't looking. Supposedly they are looking at Steven Drew, and Dan Haren now. Which with 50+ million coming off the books next season it's a real possibility they do bring some BIG names in. Also, Leyland said there is no way they trade Porcello. So I guess teams are contacting them about him.

Well I'm pretty sure Victorino could handle RF duties. I don't think it will happen either, but I think both guys need a change of scenery.

Anyways, the Phils need to do something fast. This team is falling apart and it is really getting difficult to watch the games. Baez and Herndon need to be out of the bullpen. I think a compbination of Mathieson, Zagurski, and Bastardo could fill in for Baez and Herndon. I hate to see such a talented team play such bad baseball.

I don't make the big bucks to deal with this, but to me, the issues seem sort of clear.

Jimmy is still not back to form because of his long layoff. He should eventually come around.

No problems with Chooch. Having a good year. Similarly, as is Polanco at 3B. Howard's having a good year at 1B. So, the problems lie in the outfield, second base which really cannot be fixed any better than Ransom/Valdez, and the pitching staff.

Outfield: Victorino is having a bad year. Or has reverted to his mean. Not sure. But something's gotta be done. Ibanez is done. Would Mayberry/Francisco playing every day do better? Maybe. Couldn't hurt to put Ibanez on the DL for 2 weeks and call up John Jr. Werth.....280 and 13 HRs isn't horrible. If we're going to win this year, I think the best shot is to keep him, try to resign him, and if he walks, we get arb picks. If we keep Werth, then substitute Dom Brown for Mayberry above and let Dom rake in Left Field. Interestingly, after playing RF his whole career, the past few nights Dom has started in left.

Pitching staff: Halladay & Hamels, no problem. Blanton hasn't been horrible. Last night was a good game, but because of Charlie's insistence not to use the bullpen, which I agree with, he left him in too long, whcih I don't agree with. So, we have 3 starters. Happ may be ready - he's by far my personal favorite, and I think he can be a #3 starter. That leaves #5. Call up Brandon Duckworth again. See what Vance Worley can do. Give the youngsters a shot.

Bullpen: 86 Baez. Just ******* get rid of him. Lidge & Madson & Contreras are fine for what they are. Bring up Bronco Zagurski, and bring up Scott ******* Mathieson. Durbin is fine. If we can get Herndon down to AAA, move him. If he's blocked (rule 5), then so be it, he's adequate. See if Scott Eyre wants to come out of retirement. I love JC Romero, but he's gotta go too.

That's my solution. Will it work? Dunno.

YOU KNOW
1) I never understood why the Phils were so desperate to ship Lee out and get Halladay. I never liked it from the beginning (from a Phils standpoint), and I obviously dont like it right now.

2) Why are Phils fans so desperate to ship Werth out. I dont understand that either. He helped lead you guys to the 08 Series and a WS appearance in 09 as well.

3) Why would the Rays trade Upton for Werth straight up. People are saying the Phils wouldnt do it, but if I were a Phils fan I'd love it, and if a Rays fan I wouldnt.

Not a Phils hater or fan, actually like most of their players a bit (rollins, utley, howard), so these are just unbiassed opinions.
