And again, I ask, where? It's not like 5 tool .280 BA, 30 HR, 20 SB right fielders are falling out of the sky, you know...

I'm not arguing against the signing. I was just asking for Philly fans opinions on it. I would be worried about Rollins and Utely's health and Rollins overall performance. He seems to be in a steady decline. How old is Polanco? I know Dominic Brown is supposed to be a stud but is he ready to be an everyday player. Wasn't Worth your top offensive player last year?

I wonder if Amaro would come calling for Jose Bautista. Not sure what the Phils have to part with in terms of young talent at this point, though.

Pitching, Pitching, and more Pitching. Colvin, Cosart, May, DeFratus, Worley, etc.

Are the Jays expecting Drabek to start the season in the majors this year?

There aren't any impact hitters in this free agent market that play a position they need other than perhaps Crawford. They can trade for a bat if they need one.

More than likely he'll enter the season as the #4/5. At this point there's probably a three way battle for two spots (Drabek, Rzepczynski, Litsch). All three are more than major league capable but Litsch may not be fully recovered in time. Z. Stewart's a possibility too

I don't see the Jays attempting to acquire pitching if dealing a chip like Bautista. Even with the Marcum trade they're still overflowing with pitching. I know you can never have enough but Anthopolous seems to be priming for a run in 2012-2014 and would likely want to acquire a position player ready to contribute at the opening of that window.

Even with regression and failed prospects, there's likely way more than enough pitching in the minors to sustain a rotation for the next few years, at least. It's insane trying to even slot rotations for the minor league teams.

Do you have any idea what pitchers are going to Vegas? My uncle is gonna be there this year. He was in New Hampshire last year. Just curious.

I do, look forward in 2012...that is $40MM to just Halladay and Lee...another around 12MM to Oswalt and another 12MM to Hamels...a little ridiculous...
Do you really thing they are gonna be that bad in 2 years? Have you seen any signs of them slowing down? Roy Halladay won a cy young this year.
Ok fine, then how about 2013 or 14 they will be a lot older and will not produce at a $20MM value.
Those will be the years the Giants will just plain SUCK!
Lol, how? Posey entering his prime, Lincecum will be 29-30, Cain will still be good, Bumgarner will be 24-25 and Wheeler will be up. Plus we have Brandon Belt coming, Thomas Neal...nosterbor you are probably a Doggie fan.

Thought I'd post this

Great article. But as amazing as those guys were, its perhaps equally amazing that they only won it once, if I'm not mistaken.

And you are basing a lot of this on the fact that Wheeler, Belt, and Neal will all reach their respective ceilings. Just saying the probability of that happening is pretty small. Also, how is the toll of catching going to be on Posey? What about Lincy's innings? He had that terrible August because of conditioning problems so I would not be totally surprised if when he is 30 or so, conditioning will become extremely important for him. Sounds like a lot of hoping on your part. Not saying you are wrong, just find it ridiculous that you are so certain.

Looks like Timmy's conditioning did him well in October and November and he will most certainly keep it up. You never know about a team until the season ends, I mean there were several people claiming Lincencum had lost all velocity and his career was done and then he goes out and has a 14 K shutout against the Braves, beats the unbeatable Halladay and then beats the certainally unbeatable Lee twice, while going 4-1 in the post season. The Phillies made a great move to get Lee, they have hamstrung themselves with money if they don't win big over the course of the contract and at this point at least one team out there has beaten the big 4 when it counts the most. It should be a great season watching all of the pitching in the NL. Starting to look like the '60's with the great pitching staffs of the Giants, Dodgers and Cardinals.

That is one nasty rotation on paper.

I'll still pick my young Giants staff :P

Plus we have a better closer (not that the phillies need one with halladay and lee lol)

Really surprised at these stats:
2009:

Lee: 14-13, 3.22 ERA, 231.2 IP, 1.243 WHIP, 7 K/9
Cain: 14-8, 2.89 ERA, 217 IP, 1.181 WHIP, 7.1 K/9

2010:

Lee: 12-9, 3.18 ERA , 212.1 IP , 1.003 WHIP, 7.8 K/9
Cain: 13-11, 3.14 ERA, 223.1, 1.084 WHIP, 7.1 K/9

I think the Giants staff is way more comparable to the braves staff of the 90's than the phillies...purely based on age.

Lincecum 2X Cy Young 26
Matt Cain AS been in the league for 5 years and is 25
MAdison Bumgarner upcoming star and will broke in this season as 20
SAnchez finally put his tools together and possibly the nastiest left handed pitcher in the NL 27
Then there is the former xy young winner barry zito..

and we'll see who comes up from the farm system (Zack wheeler?)-Heck the rotation who won the WS in 2010 all came t hrough the Giants farm system (homegrown)

Nastiest lefty in the NL, his name is Kershaw.

Honestly pitching is everything....don't tell me going into the playoffs that the Giants had the best offense. ;)

Pitching > Hitting

Phillies easily have the best staff going into 2011 though. Should be an interesting season

I am so excited now. I want to watch the four game series Giants vs Phillies

I think they stack up pretty even.
Lincecum vs Halladay (even)
Cain vs Lee (even, yess bite me and check the stats)
Sanchez vs Oswalt (I'll give it to Oswalt, but not by much)
Bumgarner vs Hamels (Even again)

Buut of course phillies offense > giants offense
