Can a company produce a comprehensive set (200 plus cards) consisting of drawn pictures (reproductions, not 1/1s) showing logos WITHOUT paying the player or league?

I know there's a loop hole or something around using a likeness or logos as long as it's an artist's rendition.

I'm kind of surprised no company, be it Leaf, ITG, UD, etc. has tried something like this.

Add in jerseys and cut autos (no player fees) and I would assume it's a money maker.

What am I missing?

I think BG had hinted at doing something like this recently, but nothing had come of it lately...

Sound more cost prohibitive than a legal problem. That would be a LOT of art to commission, which wouldn't be cheap.

I could be wrong, but isn't the reproduction part the stickler? We have seen plenty of sets that reproduce original art (Topps Gallery and UD Masterpiece come to mind), but all of the stuff coming out from unliscensed companies recently has all been original 1/1s. I have to think that these companies have considered your idea, yet they are still doing it 1/1 original art style for a reason.

Those Moore cards are terrible, but it seems like I remember checking out other art from that same artist and some of it was pretty good. Maybe the art was reflective of the fee paid in that particular instance? "You get what you pay for".

I believe the loophole is that the art work has to be the original hence the 1/1s, once you print the artwork it is no longer an original and does not fall into the loophole
