I'd still take Romero over 2-3 of the guys listed here. Redoing the draft, he probably goes 7-8th.

Definitely Tulo first, followed by Braun. After that, Upton and then it gets murky.

The fact that nobody even mentioned Romero and guys like Hellickson and Rasmus are in top 10s is insane.

Here's the Top 11 from 2005, by WAR:

Tulowitzki 22.7
Braun 19.3
Zimmerman 18.0
Y. Escobar 16.8
McCutchen 12.5
Ellsbury 11.5
Upton 11.4
Gardner 10.9
Garza 10.8
Romero 9.1

Didn't realize Yunel was from the 2005 draft. He'd easily be top 15 now. McCutchen and Ellsbury are definitely on the rise, along with Upton but Tulo would clearly be my #1 choice.

EDIT: Whoops, missed Brett Gardner. Make it top 11.

Romero gives up a hit an inning and lets face it, I take the next 5 years of what Jeremy might do over what Matt Garza and Rickey Romero have done so far....

If Justin Upton is doing this now, I hate to see what his career year will be.... Ryan Braun and Ryan Zimmerman are in their peak years at the age of 27 & 26.

The Top 10:

1. Upton
2. Braun
3. Tulowitzki
4. McCutchen
5. Bruce
6. Bucholz
7. Zimmerman
8. Hanson
9. Rasmus
10. Hellickson

Ellsbury is a huge omission. Top 5 in AL MVP race right now. Jay Bruce and Rasmus have potential and some major league success but neither has put together the production of Ellsbury.

I am obviously biased toward Upton, but like he said I think we are all forgeting that Upton is only 23 years old. Braun is 27. I don't even want to begin to imagine what Upton's numbers are going to look like next year when he is 24 most of the season let alone what he will do when he is 26-30. It is going to be fun to watch!

On this same vein you also have to factor in their production to this point, Braun has provided more value in the six years following the draft than Upton has. Upton definitely has more left to give, but putting Braun ahead is more than reasonable.

Agreed, I think you could easily make a case for Ellsbury at #1 with the year he's having. He could hit .320 with 120 runs 25-30 hrs 90 RBIs and 50 steals. I know its the first year that he's showcased this power but if he turns into a 25 HR guy instead of 10-15, he could find himself in the discussion for being a top buy in all of baseball.

Great point.

Are we redoing the draft now and you get the players from NOW on, or are we redoing the draft THEN knowing what we know NOW.

The value of what the players have already provided is either ignored or very valuable.
