Lets see your favorite photo on a card

Here is my real one. This card basically sums up why I started collecting, so it has that significance to me (or bias I suppose). I always had a gut feeling this swing was a home run. When was it, how far did it go, opposing team, opposing pitcher? The real question I always wondered about though, was how high did that bat fly in the air? What sound did it make when it hit the ground?

I know that might sound cheesy, but I used to look at that card in a JcPenny's catalog when they used it to advertise the 2001 Topps complete set and imagine what it would be like to be in the crowd and watch him play.

I chose the photos for all of 2002 Topps, and this is my favorite.

As an interesting aside, I loved this shot and wanted to use it, but the baseball was much higher in the actual photograph. Piatt had clearly made a great effort but missed the home run ball. I asked the retouchers to move the ball down a bit so that whether or not he had made the catch was open to interpretation.'


Is that unethical as a baseball card editor?

Unethical? Hmm, I'm a journalist so I might have different feelings on this than others, but doctoring a photo in that way is a little odd and shady, especially because the placement of the ball makes it look like he's about to catch it. Then again, it's only a baseball card. I'm sure Piatt was happy to see it! I might've suggested moving the ball down so that it was still in the picture but it was more clear that it was going to go over the glove, which maintains some of the integrity of what actually happened, but then again, it's still only a baseball card and not an AP photo...

Thanks for the input, and I agree on all points. I didn't think of myself as a journalist in the job, but more like a publicist.

We did this sort of thing from time to time. I can't remember the player, but we had such a sharp and intense shot of his swing that I really wanted to use. The problem was that the ball was just behind the bat, showing that he clearly missed the ball on the swing. I asked them to put the ball in front of the bat.
