I myself are looking for a Mickey Mantle baseball as well. With a TON of Mantle forgeries on the market (many authenticated by PSA & JSA) I would only trust a Upper Deck Authenticated (UDA) auto baseball. At least they are a reputable name and he signed the baseballs in front of them. Do not buy a UDA ball that they authenticated after the fact. I see alot of UDA balls popping up. They are trying to get in to the authenticating business. I just picked up a UDA Ted Williams ball. I also have a UDA Koufax ball. For the "big" names I would only go with UDA so I can rest easy.

If you decide to bid on a UDA Mantle ball on the bay PM so we dont bid against each other! :D

Afforddable and legit DO not go hand and hand, there are so many GOOD fakes out there thats its way to risky. The only ones I would suggest is UDA or a 1991 score Mickey Mantle card. If you go score make sure it says autograph somewhere on the back, the forgers are now starting to sign the base version.

What about the 92 Score? I've seen those before. Are they legit?

the 1992 score thats numbered and says autograph on the back where pack inserted in series 2 packs. They are 100% legit and Mantle signed like 25,000 of them so they are plentiful. There are I think 6 or 7 different type cards signed, all showcasing his career.

Also if you go score make sure the autograph is strong, from years of sunlight exposure some are on their way out fading. When and if you get one I hope you share the pictures :D

I picked up a Natural Light magazine ad that is personalized to "Dot" that was picked up in the 80's at a bar in a hotel. The woman picked up a magazine in the gift shop and had the ad signed (Mantle was on the ad). Not authenticated but had a pretty bad title and looks spot on. It was framed and the paper backing on the frame was accurately aged (brown paper backing covering the frame so it couldn't have been put in recently. The paper was too brittle) and had a year on the framing shop tag.

I got it for $50.

Sorry, I can't agree with the bold and underlined statement above. My personal experience was as follows:

I had three Mantle auto baseballs. I purchased these right before his death. Last year, I decided to have them authenticated at a show by JSA. One of the three balls came back as "not authentic". The other two were certified as authentic. After looking at them carefully with the show rep, he pointed out some VERY minor discrepancies that forced him to say it wasn't real.

Now, lets add in the fact that UD had that issue selling fake autos featured Bryant Gumbel's show.....and I would say stay away from UD.

I think your stories are crossed up as far as I know only psa/jsa where discussed in the hbo thing not upper deck. And I can tell you this psa has let so many mantle forgeries through its sickening. IF YOU MUST go 3rd party go jsa.

UD released a quad cut auto that sold on Ebay for $85,000. It was later proven on that show that at least the Ruth cut auto featured on the card was fake.

Fake autos were sent to 6 authenticators. Four of them failed to recognized the forgeries and two were able to catch the forgeries. *** and Richard Simon passed the test.

Thats not UDA thats others. UDA is in the presence not an opinion. And do yourself a favor and stay far far away from *** towards the end before the collapse they where just sending stickers and coa's to big dealers.

Back in 1990, I got Mickey Mantle's autograph in person at a card show.
The promoter charged $30 per signature, which was extremely high back then.
I had Mantle sign a ball and an 8x10 and now I wish I'd gotten a lot more.

Exactly in the presence, not an opinion....
Would you rather have a Babe Ruth autograph baseball card that was signed in the presence of JSA, OR a cut autograph card that JSA says "likely genuine"?
I'll take presence all the time.
Side not I also had in person autos fail JSA & PSA as well. Some were rushed by the player which caused the minor difference and therefore the failure. On the other hand many forged Mantle's have been authenticated (some better then Mantles own sig!)

Here's my Mantle Card (Packed Pulled by me) :D
