I don't really now the full story on why the Royals drafted Hochevar 1st overall. Was he really that good or projected to be that good? Was never really sold on him for some reason. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks,
ROB

Hochevar was a stud in high school.

Hochevar was a stud in college.

Hochevar was a stud in the minors.

So, yes, he was that good.

Chances are that if you weren't "high on him", you didn't know much about him.

Probably not, but he could be a solid 2-3 starter.

The whole concept of "prospecting" creates jaded expectations of what players are supposed to become in the majors. 90% of everyday major leaguers were studs throughout their lower level playing careers...but every single prospect (or top prospect) can't be a "top tier" player.

And every day major leaguer is an amazing baseball player.

I would classify a solid 2-3 pitcher a stud. Ace caliber is a star, stud is a very solid player ;) (to me).

He was drafted in the first round by the Dodgers in 05, then he played independent league ball, and was drafted by the Royals 1st overall in 2006, of course.

Probably better picks at #1, but he seems to have a nice future. He's 25 already, so he should be ready.

Hochevar was never a strikeout artist, per say. He never struck out more than a batter an inning at any stop, unless i'm mistaken. He does, however, have a very good fastball and some really strong secondary stuff.

A lot of the reason that people are "low" on Hochevar is that he was taken ahead of a lot of really strong players like Longoria, Kershaw, Lincecum, and at one point guys like Andrew Miller and Brandon Morrow were considered better talents.
