Why in God's name is he in single-A still? this guy deserves to be in double-A after what he did last year and his first couple starts this year

Needs to work on his secondary pitches, at this point he's still living on his fastball...

I am thinking the same thing! However we need to remind ourselves that he's only 19 (I believe), and perhaps the Giants organization does not want to rush him... I think he's playing exceptional so far, and needs to be promoted to AA to get more and more experience.

I believe he has been using his secondary pitches, but still a promotion will help more.

Don't you agree?

.... because the weather in CT at the beginning of the season sucks and they want to make sure he's able to get his innings in.

Ugh. I'm not even a big Bumgarner fan, but that's just not true anymore.

You dont agree with the fact he needs to continue to work on his secondary pitches? Also, his fastball seems to still be his out pitch.

As a New York based Giants fan, I'm looking forward to making my way to a couple of Connecticut games this summer. I'm assuming that Posey, Bumgarner and Alderson will all be there. Sosa and Gillaspie will likely join them, as well...

Also, keep in mind that the Giants don't really care what the level is, they just care that Bumgarner is being challenged and continues to develop. I can't think of a better challenge right now than to send him to the CAL league where everything he throws will flatten out a bit and all fly balls get an extra 10-20% boost. I wouldn't worry about whether he's at A ball or AA, b/c the CAL league is essential as difficult for a pitcher to succeed in as many AA ball parks.

I agree that he can use more work on his secondary stuff, but that isn't the part I take issue with - it's saying he's living off his fastball. His offspeed stuff has improved by leaps and bounds since he was drafted. He's not just a thrower, but that said, when a lefty has a fastball like Bumgarner's, it SHOULD be his out pitch.

Bumgarner has yet to pitch in a hitter's park in the Cal. All that changes tonight when he starts in Lancaster.

Well, if they have improved, no one is telling him...

“I’d like my changeup to get a lot better,” he said. “I want to be able to throw it in any count. I don’t have the confidence I’d like to have with it.”

He needs to stay where he is for another half a season or so and work on the other pitches.

Like others have said, he's 19 years old just beginning his second pro season. The weather in Connecticut is a concern for the Giants. But all this might not matter anymore because I read recently that Bumgarner's start tonight might be his last for San Jose. Bum and Alderson next stop AA.

Link to the story. The relevant paragraphs
Tim Alderson and Madison Bumgarner are starting Monday and Tuesday for Single-A San Jose at Lancaster. It’s a five-hour drive from the Bay Area, but you might want to make it. I have a feeling they’ll be a lot further away very soon. As in two time zones away at Double-A Connecticut. I expect these will be their last starts before receiving a promotion.

It’s been widely assumed that catcher Buster Posey will tag along, but don’t be so certain about that. Posey will probably get at least 300 at-bats at San Jose before the Giants look at moving him up. Shortstop Brandon Crawford could be jumped before Posey.

Shouldn't have anything to do with him moving up or not moving up. Plenty of guys in the majors have the fastball as their out pitch.

In fact alot do, to me an out pitch is one you can throw any count and preferebly 3-2, some guys can throw a change or curve in that but most feel more comfortable throwing a heater, and when you throw mid-upper 90's it works quite a bit.

There is definitely something out of the ordinary right now that I'm checking on. I'd guess that this will be Madison's last start for SJ.
