How about this for the future say 15 years from now. Player cuts off his hand during the off season while working on his fathers farm. He is a pitcher and 2 years before the accident, he had a new hand grown thru stem cells and reattached. To shorten the healing time once the new hand is attached, he then starts taking Myostatin Inhibitors which is a protein that enhances muscle regeneration.
MLB is going to have some huge problems with the fine line between "performance enhancing" and "corrective" and "recuperation enhancement" imo.

How is it performance enhancing to have a hand back? That's back to even.

I am sorry, but I do not know of too many drugs perscribed for "Personal Reasons" that would have a PED in it, unless it was prescribed to personally enhance his performance....

Maybe an erectile dysfuction problem could be listed under a "Personal Reason"? I'm not a Manny-backer (though I do have him in several fantasy league, dang you Manny! :x ) but there are prescription's out there that really have nothing to do with what steroid's are initially intended for in these circumstance's, & I can see how this could have been a slip-up.

This PED situation just won't go away. All parties are to blame: MLB, MLBPA, Media, Public & Card Collectors.

Everyone of thos like the long ball and therefore we all have some blame. Consider the fact how underappreciated players who were Tony Gwynn-like. High average guy; pretty good guy, but no love. There are many of those types of players in the game today. Case in point:

Greg Halman 11 HR's but only batting what .202 [that John Deer-like] The long ball

I am not a NY fan, but Jeter has an all around game and the intangibles to rise above the long-ball theory. He also playts in NY. Another case in point Mike Lowell is one of the more valuable players on the Red Sox, but he gets very little love, even after his WS MVP. The list could go on. All must take some blame.

When BA speaks of ceiling, POWER is a key component regardless of the avg. We all must share some blame. All Star Game Home Run contest; vs a Skills contest.

Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was okay to give me. Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now. I do want to say one other thing; I've taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons.

10:50am: According to Bill Shaikin and Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times, Dodgers star Manny Ramirez "tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended for 50 games starting today." The journalists have word on Manny's defense:

Ramirez is expected to attribute the test results to medication received from a doctor for a personal medical issue, according to a source familiar with the matter but not authorized to speak publicly.

Taking 15 drug tests in 5 years means, he is taking 3 a year, which also means he would have NOT been in the 108 players that tested positive as they are all tested on a regular basis.

how can anyone even care about this anymore? really football players test positive all the time and i dont see it front page anywhere... its the media making a big deal out of it because it sells their product... i am sure that greenies were in cal ripkens career and steroids go back to the 60s... no one is clean... no one... and i couldnt care less...

I think partly because the names involved in baseball have been much more high profile compared to the other sports. Also you can almost understand it with football because it is such a physical and brutal sport which baseball is the complete opposite. Does not mean it is right for a football player to do it but the public definitely views it differently.

Lastly MLB was so slow in even acknowledging there was an issue and had to endure a congressional hearing before they would do anything about it.

LOS ANGELES – A source close to Manny Ramirez(notes) said Thursday that the illegal substance for which the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger tested positive was not “an agent customarily used for performance enhancing.”

At least not on the baseball diamond. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the substance is supposed to boost sex drive. It is not ******, but a substance that treats the cause rather providing a temporary boost in sexual performance, the source said.

Ramirez tested positive for the substance during spring training, then was administered a second test more recently, and it also was positive. Major League Baseball notified Ramirez of the second positive test after Wednesday night’s Dodgers victory over the Washington Nationals. Ramirez admitted to having taken the substance and declined to appeal. His 50-game suspension begins today.

“The substance is not a steroid and it is not human-growth hormone,” the source said.

Ramirez, the source said, acquired the substance through a prescription from a doctor in Miami for his medical condition. The source intimated that Ramirez might bring legal action against the physician.

Ramirez released the following statement Thursday morning: “Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was okay to give me.
