I thought it was about time for a sketch update. I've been super busy these past months, but I found some time to finish this sketch today. I started outlining it a couple months ago...so yeah...turn around time has not been great lately :P . Anyway, stay tuned, I'll be having a contest to give this away later in the week.

VERY nice looking & it really resembles him! His nose kinda looks a little like Dimaggio (in the back portrait pic) but that full body pic is "dead-on" Mickster! ;)

Great stuff brother! :D

meh perhaps not one of my better efforts. I meant the sepia color in the backround to be kind of simple and light, but it handled differently than the regular pencil. Maybe I'll just hold on to this one.

it's clear this is not going to be considered one of my better sketches, so I went back and tried to rework a few things. The initial idea was to have a light, simple, sepia Mantle in the backround. It was too dark at first so I tried to go back and lighten it up. I tried to touch up the nose a bit, but the sepia pencil doesn't handle as well as I'd like or anything like the regular pencil. Anyway, I'd like to know from another's opinion, what went wrong with this sketch? Is the likeness not close enough? If you pulled this in a Topps pack would you be happy or think it's just a crappy sketch? I'm my own worst critic, but sometimes I've just stared at it too long and it's nice to get a fresh perspective

I was going to give it away, but I think I'm just going to hold on to it. Kinda dumb to hold a contest for 2-3 people battling it out for what others consider a crappy sketch.

....anyway, thanks for any constructive comments.

That is not a crappy sketch. I really like the contrast between the pencil sketch and the sepia tone in the background. I would be very happy to pull that from at Topps pack!

The black and white mantle looks great. The head shot in the back ground really doesn't look like him. I think it's the nose and the brow.

Ok, here is constructive criticism (I'm a designer so I hear it all the time!). I would agree, the black pencil part is a very good resemblance. The sepia is close, but doesn't look like him. It's a very good rendition, but overall I would loved to have seen it without the autograph. The auto looks out of place to me. It's obviously not dead-on, but since it is off in some ways, it may have been better to leave it off.

Great job though. I'm not into the sketch cards, but honestly it does look very cool.

Thanks for the constructive criticism guys. I really do appreciate it. I think I may stick with black and white from now on as I seem to be better at that.

I actually think maybe if you finished off the end of the bat there in the foreground sketch (normal pencil) it MIGHT give the sepia-toned sketch part a more background-ish look if that's what you're shooting for. The sketch itself looks great. The sepia-toned one is slightly off but nobody's perfect. I really like the sketch and would love to have it should you consider trading/selling/contesting it away. Great work.
