(CNN) -- Manute Bol, one of the tallest players in NBA history, died Saturday at the age of 47, a spokeswoman with the University of Virginia Medical Center confirmed to CNN.

The hospital did not disclose the cause of death.

Bol, who was listed at 7-feet-7 inches tall and 225 pounds, played for the Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat in his 12-year career.

The native of Sudan was known during and after his career for his charity work for his home country.

I believe for his first home game, they had Manute Bol Night.

Anyone named "Manute" got in free.

Anyone over seven feet tall got in free.

Anyone from the Sudan got in free.

(I think they had one taker.)

Bol and Mutumbo have done a lot of work in Aftrica.

Manute lived here in Olathe, a suburb of KC. People really like him. We have a good sized African population here in KC and especially Johnson county. He was a really funny guy.

I'll never forget when Orlando Woolridge posterized Manute, loved it. Bol is a perfect example of how it takes more than size to make it in the NBA, even though he did last 8 seasons he could have been a much better player if his talent matched his size. Still it is sad news, RIP.

Very sad. I have many fond memories of going to Warriors games as a kid and watching him play. He will definitely be missed. The humanitarian things he did for Sudan were saint like. All those publicity stunts he did was just to get more money for Sudan.

This. A great humanitarian and I absolutely LOVED watching him play. I can't remember if he was in Washington or Golden St. when he blew up for one game, nailing 8 or 9 three's. Just amazing to see a guy 7'7" draining 3's and the crowd was freaking out !!!

RIP Manute
