From the video I saw on Pardon the Interruption it was evident he missed the ball.

But was his intent to spit on the ball?

Yes it was and you dont have to be very smart to realize that. I am sure this isnt the only time he has done this and im sure he dint miss other baseballs he has tried that too. I am not sure how I fell about the guy as he is still one of the best pitchers and does not need the spit on aball and just bothers me that he would even try this. Im sure now that he has been spotted on camera he wont try it again any time soon.

Of course MLB didn't find any wrong doing. They need to keep Yankees in the mix for TV ratings and advertising. If Ryan Madson or Jonathan Broxton did it, they would be serving a suspension.

+100

And didn't Rogers do that in consecutive games, then deny it completely, as if a pitcher wouldn't notice a huge dirt stain on his hand? Lying cheating hothead SOB.

Is it possible Rivera was just trying to wet his fingers like a lot of pitchers do when they lick them?

Whether it hit the ball or not, it looks like it was attempted. Thats kind of unfortunate to see from Rivera or any pitcher for that matter. I'm not a yankee fan, but I do repsect Rivera. Just something you don't like to see from anyone.

Theres no way he did it but for all those who think he did, think about this:

Hes facing center field where theres 4-7 cameras PLUS still cameras.
Not to mention the other cameras around the stadium and opposing players.

Yeah, but it's not like they sit around reviewing raw footage to see if anything illicit happened. Whether there's one camera or 1000, it needs to be seen at the time by the producer, a camera operator or shown on-air for the cameras to mean anything.

Anyone objectively looking at that footage can say at the minimum that he shouldn't be spitting while holding the ball and staring at it like that.
It looks terrible, regardless of intent.

Rivera is off the mound and he spat. So what? Some of the comments are ridiculous. If you want to see how a pitcher throws a spit ball (or vaseline, sweat, etc). Go look up video of Gaylord Perry. If a MLB pitcher is going to try to moisten the ball, they aren't going stand near the mound and spit at the ball.
