Rumors are going around about the Yankees sending Hideki Matsui to the Mariners for Erik Bedard. I wouldn’t be against this trade. It makes sense because Bedard would be a free agent after the season. It would be like giving a one-year contract to Pettitte, in that he can come for one year and leave. Hughes can get the #5 spot after the season.

In other news, the LA Dodgers have contacted Adam Dunn. Now this is interesting because it might change where Manny Ramirez lands. Manny already declined the contract they offer him, and the Dodgers are sick of waiting for him.

from rototimes:

Matsui for Bedard? - There is a rumor that the Yankees are talking to the Mariners about a trade involving pitcher Erik Bedard for outfielder Hideki Matsui, according to BleedingBlueandTeal.com. Peter Gammons originally reported the news on ESPN radio.

Our View: The Mariners covet a productive outfielder with power after losing Raul Ibanez, and Matsui would fill their need. But losing Bedardwould be tough as he is the ace of the Mariners’ pitching staff, assuming he bounces back healthy. If he lands with the Yankees, the club would have four ace hurlers in their

—————————————

Dodgers contact Dunn - The Dodgers have contacted Adam Dunn’s agent (Greg Genske), according to ESPN.

Our View: The Cubs are believed to be Dunn’s preferred destination, but it would be hard to turn down a strong offer from the defending NL West champs. Apparently the Dodgers are tired of waiting for Manny Ramirez, and are considering Dunn to fill the void in their outfield. The Dodgers could use the slugger after ranking 14th in the NL in home runs in 2008.

Strange. Dont know how I feel about it. I like Bedard, but I want to see Hughes get a chance. Oh well. We'll see what happens.

I would like to see the Bedard deal get done, we really don't need Matsui at the moment.

I really want to see Hughes take the spot but who knows someone could get injured or anything can happen..

If the Yanks' got Bedard, I think they are a better team giving Hughes a shot at #5, and putting Joba back at set-up. That basically makes it a 7-inning game against the best rotation by far....

As an M's fan, I'll pass. A rebuilding team doesn't need to get older and more expensive, especially when Bedard would have more potential trade value if he is even close to his old self. Unless the team is trying to totally corner the Japanese market, or the team knows something about Bedard that freaks them the hell out, it doesn't really make sense to me. If it was to happen, it better not be straight up, the M's would need atleast a solid prospect too.

I'd do that in a heartbeat if I were the Yanks. Not a doubt in my mind. CC, ****, Bedard, Burnett, and Joba, with Hughes spot-starting when Burnett inevitably misses time? Pretty impressive.

And I think this would be a move made solely to corner the Japanese market. Ichiro seems to have given them an amazing Japanese following, Godzilla would only enhance that.

I don't live in Seattle, but I wouldn't be thrilled, I wouldn't be very happy at all. Also, what would Matsui do to fill anymore seats than the team as it is? What's he going to do, draw even more fans of Japanese heritage? He likely won't produce better than Ibanez, so it would basically be trading a talented lefty they gave the farm for, for the same player we just let go, but probably more expensive.

though i dont think bedard is going to be able to keep up with alot of the yankees starters, i think matsui will fit in great in seattle. ichiro will benefit form having a good friend there. from reports ichiro wasnt well liked from alot of teamates, but i think he will act better with his friend matsui around

What cracks me up the most about this deal (if it actually goes through) is that the Yankees have Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy now just twiddling their thumbs.

Scratch that...what cracks me up even more is that the Yankees refused to give these two up along with Melky and someone else (I forget who) for the best pitcher in the game today and he's now playing for another New York team.

The new Stein~brainiacs~ have no idea how to handle their ballclub. They want the best of the best and yet last year they refused to trade three youngsters that - as it looks now - won't see the light of day for THE BEST pitcher in the game.

Imagine if they gave up Hughes, Kennedy, Melky, and say...Tabata (who they had this time last year) for Santana, then signed all they have so far and trade for Bedard

Their rotation:

Santana
Sabathia
****
Bedard
Burnett

Set up: Joba
Closer: Duh

To be fair, it's not like they could have predicated the Hughes injury. Also, if they have Santana, they likely make the playoffs last year, and this whole spending spree is minimized.

Agreed. If they had acquired Santana, there's no way in hell they get Sabathia. Burnett probably, as they've had a hard-on for him all season, and they probably get Tex, but no way I see them getting CC after that deal.

Not to be rude, but what does Hughes injury have to do with anything? Has he suddenly become a Bill Pulsipher b/c of an injury? The guy proved he can deal in the majors and in the playoffs two years ago. I don't see why, in one year, the Yankees have changed their opinion on Phil Hughes b/c of an injury.

I'm glad they don't have Johan. But I laughed so hard when the Yankees turned that down. I'm a die hard O's fan and of our three top tier pitching prospects: Matusz, Tillman, and Arietta - I would easily give up any of those two for Santana.

No one has talked about how bad this trade would be for the Yanks! I am a Yankee fan and this deal sucks! You are sending Matsui for another injury prone pitcher. Not that Hughes did not ahve his share of injuries last year, but Bedard is meh. I would take my chances dealing for someone else.

Heres the post from my blog that I don't feel like retyping:

That is what is being rumored. Hideki Matsui would go to the Mariners in exchange for Erik Bedard. Bedard would likely come in as a one year rental as he is a free agent after the season. Bedard, who was acquired in a deal from the Orioles for top prospect Adam Jones, as well as George Sherrill, and Chris Tillman, would likely become the 4th or 5th starter. This move would make sense for Bedard because Bedard has been known to be on a strict pitch count and will literally pull himself out of the game if he ecclipses 100 pitches. As a 4th or 5th starter, he would not need to go 7 innings as the ace to carry the team, but giving them five, maybe six strong innings is all they need. Especially considering they have inning eaters in Sabathia and ****. Bedard did have injuries last year which did set him back, but if he can recover it might be a nice pickup for the Yankees. Matsui, on the other hand, is coming off his injury and would likely DH in New York if he stays there. The Yankees are looking to move an extra outfielder they have, maybe to move salary to get Manny, or to get that last pitcher they are eyeing (instead of signing Pettite). Matsui would replace Raul Ibanez, who signed with the Phillies for a 3 yr / 30 MM deal earlier this month. It would be a great trade for both sides. Not to mention, Ichiro is already in Seattle and he could feel right at home, especially with all the Japanese media that is already in place due to Ichiro.
