From ESPN ...

"The San Francisco Giants have worked out a new contract for All-Star Matt Cain that will make him the highest-paid right hander in baseball history.

Cain, who was set to earn about $15 million in the last year of his contract, will have that deal ripped up and will get six years and $127.5 million, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney. He gets a player option for 2018 that can bring the total value of the contract to $141 million. Cain receives a full no-trade clause."

I like Matt Cain and think he's one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball, but that's a lot of money for a lot of years.

It is a lot of money for a lot of years but with the new Dodger owners able to throw money around the Giants needed to lock up Cain for awhile and give themselves some time with Lincecum's contract in a couple of year. Now that Cain has signed I wonder is Hamels will as well.

With Cain off the FA market, all the more reason for Hamels NOT to re-up and hit the market after 2012....Dodgers or any other team looking for top end starters will battle for Hamels, with Cain no longer a plan B....

Word was that the Phillies were hoping to re-sign Hamels to a deal in the neighborhood of 4 years/$80 million ... not going to happen after this Cain deal.

Hamels will get CC money now, but great move by the Giants to lock up Cain long term!

Great job by both Cain and the Giants to get this worked out. Cain has been the workhorse for the Giants, and he's younger than Lincecum. I like it.

Joey Votto just got an extension bringing his contract to 12 years $252 million.

Considering this is the most money ever given to a right handed pitcher I believe the pendulum has now swung around to overrated, haha.
Only considering the stupid money the Dodgers would have been willing to spend on him.

I'm proud of him - deserves it and has a hot wife, too. (just got the DVD of The Franchise: Failure of the SF Giants 2011 and coincidentally saw the episode with him and Chelsea and their child and then a few hours later saw the AP story about his new pact).

I think it's a good deal for the Giants, to at least secure a key member of the staff for the foreseeable future.

But of course, heard this when listening to the Yanks/Marlins broadcast last night:
"All that money for a pitcher with a losing record!"

Saw so many people complaining about that, people that don't bother to look at the numbers just think he loses that means he must suck! When really he has had one of the lowest run support in the MLB throughout his career in SF.

For that kind of money, I would like to see him get more complete games but you can't look at his record. The dude has averaged over 200 IP his first 6 full seasons with an ERA of 3.30ish, and his WHIP has gone down almost every year.

A nice stat for him is that he only allowed 9 HR last year. That's pretty good.
