yea, if the pats had gotten another 1st rounder, especially a high one, they would have had to guarantee a lot of $, something they rarely ever do. Vrabel was going to walk after this season, and getting anything for Cassel is a bonus if you think about it. He went from just being a backup QB to getting the Pats a 2nd round pick. The Patriots also have high hopes for O'connel. Spent a 3rd round pick on him.

I just don't see any logical reason in accepting the 34th pick in a draft over the 12th. If they don't want to spend the money to sign a high pick then they would do what they always do and trade down. I was reading on the Bucs website and there are "reports" that Bellicheck just didn't want to send Cassell to Denver because thats where McDaniels is and he didn't want help him out.

It would have been great to see Cutler in a Bucs uniform, probably would have made them contenders in the NFC.

The more I think about it (and I know Bellichick wasnt thinking this), why would you want to help out the team who ended your MVP Qb's season? If theres any team you wouldnt want to help out, it should be that one. I dont even care that Pioli is there.

Well I believe Bellicheck is very close with Pioli and that is what started the connection with KC. I also heard that the deal for the #12 pick was offered after KC and NE had agreed to a trade. If he had to decide between helping Pioli and helping Mcdaniels he would clearly choose Pioli. And its not like it was KC's fault Brady got hurt. It was a freak occurence

While I understand the reasoning behind the trade, I think it's kind of messed up of the Pats to do that to Cassel. He played decently all season while Brady was hurt. The Pats put the franchise tag on him in early January to keep him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Then they turn around less than two months later and trade him for next to nothing. No loyalty.

Everyone including him knew when he signed the franchise tag he was most likely going to be traded.

I see. Well, I must not read far enough into these things.

Ok, so there has been a very big development in this story. The initial rumor of the Patriots being offered the 1st and 3rd round pick that Denver had for Cassel is not true. Supposedly the Patriots were getting 2 picks, Cassel was going to the Broncos and Cutler went to Tampa Bay. The truth to that is Cutler, Cassel and the picks were involved but the Broncos would have received the 2 first round picks for Cutler from Tampa Bay, Cutler goes to Tampa Bay, Cassel goes to Denver and the Patriots end up with the 3rd round pick and I would guess a player or later pick from Denver.

i think people overestimated the value Cassel had on the trade front. Also people seem to think that adding Vrabel to the deal made the deal worth more in terms of return, but it actually probably lowered what the patriots were looking for. They were able to move a old LB with a salary of $4+ million.
