Matt Harvey To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

By Steve Adams [October 4 at 4:00pm CST]
The Mets have announced that ace Matt Harvey has elected to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery later this month.

Harvey's absence for the 2014 season will be a crushing blow, as the 24-year-old was worth a robust 6.1 wins above replacement (per Fangraphs) in just 178 1/3 innings this season. Harvey pitched to an electric 2.27 ERA with 9.6 K/9, 1.6 BB/9 and a 47.7 percent ground-ball rate over the course of his first full season at the Major League level in 2013.

The Mets were expected to be aggressive players on the free agent market with an eye toward contending in 2014 with David Wright healthy at third base and a young pitching core fronted by Harvey, Zack Wheeler and Jonathon Niese. They still appear poised to make a splash on the free agent market this winter, though the news that they will officially be without Harvey in 2014 has to significantly dampen expectations for the team's ultimate performance next season.

Though the team has numerous young pitching options, the confirmation that Harvey will be sidelined for the entirety of the 2014 campaign could increase the likelihood that the team adds a veteran starting pitcher to a wishlist that reportedly already includes Shin-Soo Choo.

There it is.. To bad but at least we've seen that guys coming back from Tommy John can still be successful.

Hobby Career Over

too early to say. I think he still has a chance to be a great player when he is fully healthy from the surgery in 2016.

I think it's a smart decision to TJ now - imagine if the Mets babied him along in 2014, he was ineffective because he was so afraid of further damaging the elbow and things went catastrophic mid to late season and he'd miss the time anyway with TJ surgery. It's best to do it now to minimize his games missed.

I wouldnt say his "hobby career" is over, I mean the guy is still young, he'll be back in 2015, Now would be a great time to pick his stuff up pretty reasonable, "sit" on them, and when he's healthy in 2015, we'll see what happens. Short term...Yes, his cards will be down, but to say it's "over" to me is nonsense.....

So look for him to return to his dominant self in Spring of '16? Some of these guys take awhile even after being back on the roster to get back in the groove.

Right, he'll be back in 2015 and then hopefully back to himself in 2016.

It will take time once he gets back, but to say that his "hobby career" is over?, to me is nonsense. I will buy his stuff all day long for cheap, and sit on it for 1, or 2 years, it's NOT like the guy is 40 years old, to me it's worth the gamble....Strasburg had TJ surgery, and while his cards were down for a while, last time I checked his "hobby career" isn't over....;)

Except that Isringhausen had a very good career.

Yes the Is had a good career but those three were dubbed the future of the Mets. Never did happen and Mets quickly discarded them. Is became All-Star outside the Mets
