They are EXACTLY equal. If one does something better than the other, then the other does something better than the one. It's a wash.

Exactly equal.

Gotta be Mauer. I thought he was gone after making the prospectcollector guy or whatever.

I would take Mauer. He is a better hitter and a better catcher. I think if they both stay healthy and continue to produce like they have and thy stay behind the dish than they both have a shot at the Hall of Fame. I think Mauer has a shot to go down as one of the best catchers in the history of the game.

It's an interesting question. Mauer has been extraordinary catcher when has been able to remain on the field. He has won 3 batting titles at a position than has rarely seen a player win a single one. He has won an MVP and finished in the top 10 3 more times, and won 4 silver sluggers. He has also won 3 gold gloves. He's a unique talent behind the plate.

McCann on the other hand has never had an extraordinary season. He has never lead the league in any significant stat. The highest he ended in MVP voting is 21st, and that's the only time he ever got a single vote. And yet McCann has done something Mauer has not been able to, he has stayed on the field. McCann has been one of the top 2-3 catchers in the NL for over half a decade. He has made 6 consecutive All-Star teams and won 4 silver sluggers.

At the current time IMO, both have done enough at their current age to allow people to speculate that either could be a Hall of Famer. Catchers are judged by different criteria than other players, and both players have been very impressive compared to players at the same position. A lot will depend on how gracefully they age, but I think they both have a shot.

Great post and I agree totally. McCann has been the top catcher in the NL and Mauer in the AL. Both have been putting up consistently strong numbers and if they keep it up they'll both go down as HOF worthy catchers.

Toss-up.

Neither makes the Hall...

+1. HOF enshrinement depends on whether they stay at the catcher position.
I think Mauer could switch and still make the Hall. .324 lifetime batting average, over .400 OBP. Would have to obviously keep it up for a while, but he is a great hitter no matter the position.
