Re: New Small Player Collection - Max Bats

They've been at Twinsfest for many years. A few years ago, they had a table set up for kids to paint their own mini MAX bat. While my boys finished theirs up, Corey Koskie came over with his kids to get them started. Pretty cool idea to make a souveneer. I bought a pair of batting gloves from them for $10. (IIRC)

Nick went the Peter Max route, while Kendal kept his basic black with yellow on the end. The tough part was going places without smudging them! My wife eventually sat in the bleachers with the bats until they dried. She's a keeper!

Cool. Can't see the logo in the pic though, so can't add it to my checklist!

Re: New Small Player Collection - Max Bats

A few more interesting tidbits from Paul Johnson at Max Bat:

1) He claims the the average MLB game bat lasts less than 5 AB (I'm skeptical or maybe I misheard him)
2) Ross Gload once used a Max Bat for 275 ABs
3) The day before we arrived, they had just completed a rush order for Jimmy Rollins for a dozen bats. They looked at previous orders and knew it was impossible that he could need more, but Jimmy just wanted "fresh" bats.
4) Don't store your bats in extreme heat or cold as that tends to dry the wood out
5) MLB requires that the grain of the wood be at least 97% vertical. Max Bat claims that using round wood billets (only one other bat company uses these) instead of square billets allows them to have a lower percent that do not meet the 97% threshold
6) The owner of the company has a son named Max. When he was making bats in his basement, as soon as he made the Max Bat logo and put it on the bat, he knew he needed to try and make a business out of it.

And that's it for your useless information of the day.

Contract year and World Series run definitely require fresh bats!

Hey, thanks for checking. I've done double takes at the bat that Hamilton has but it isn't a Max Bat. Very curious what it is though? The Werth is probably a Max Bat, he just needed to rotate the bat a quarter turn and we'd no for sure.

Ha, 50% of the guys I collect use Max Bats. Wicked. (I also collect Josh Hamilton when he's cheap. I just don't advertise it)

You probably saw that Markakis has three bats on the Bay this week. I'd loved to get a Rollins at some point.

Re: New Small Player Collection - Max Bats

While looking through some cards the other day I checked for Max Bats cards.
From you Wanted List:
GomesToppsMax.jpg
WerthBPMax.jpg

2010 Topps Update US-79 Gomes and 2011 Bowman Platinum 61 Werth

A couple you probably know about they are just the Chrome version:
ByrdTCMax.jpg
WerthTCMax.jpg

2011 Topps Chrome 111 Byrd and 113 Werth

One not on your list:
RobertsUDMax.jpg

2008 UD Baseball Heroes 15 Brian Roberts

Shoot me a PM with your address and I'll get them to you next week.

Also, how old is Max Bats? Just wondering because I don't want to go through cards from 2005 if they didn't start making bats until 2006.
