Houston - The Houston Astros have released catcher Max Sapp, their top pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
Sapp was an 18-year old catcher from Windemere, Fla. when the Astros used the 23rd overall pick on him.
His career was derailed two years ago when he nearly lost his life after suffering from viral meningitis.
Sapp has not played since then.
In three years in the Astros organization, never above Class A, Sapp hit .224 with seven home runs and 81 RBI's in 210 games.
"Max has dealt with a series of health issues over the past two years," said Ed Wade, Astros general manager, in a text message to FOX 26 Sports. "It became apparent to us that it would be difficult for him to resume his professional baseball career.
"It's our hope that Max can move on to a productive and successful career off the field."
