A lot of various items today...1996 Best Modesto A's team set with an early Miguel Tejada card and a Steve Karsay card I needed, an A's Satchel Paige Project 70 card I missed when it first came out, a 1990 Windwalker "card" that was the last Bob Welch A's card I needed from his active playing days and was more expensive because of the guy on the back, and some various parallels. The 2009 UD Gold Jack Cust is 01/99 and the 2006 UD Silver Spectrum "Captain" Kirk Saarloos is 01/25 as a bonus.

A couple of A's from the 1980 Laughlin 300/400/500 set and the back of the Bob Welch Windwalker card. These appear to not really be "cards" but were some kind of wind chime or mobile or something, it has a die cut in the top where you can punch it out to hang it.

2005 Topps Retired Black 48/54 Bob Welch. And a card that was so crappy it was hard to find, a 2012 Rize Renato Nunez. I don't think this set was ever released in pack/box form, I believe Leaf just printed it to order for one or a few dealers back in the day. Because of that, I only ever saw the "base" card for sale in 50-card lots, and I don't care how cheap it was I did not want 50 of them. I finally saw a single for sale last week and paid $2.50 shipped just to get the stupid thing off my wantlist. I should have just ignored it like I do with Onyx cards but I thought "what's the harm in just adding the base card to my wantlist?" Sigh.

Some '90s goodness. A 1998 Red label Class 1 017/100 Ben Grieve. Already had the Class 2 /50 so I just need the Class 3 /25 now. The 1997 Pinnacle Artist's Proof McGwire completes the team set. And the 1992 Donruss Update Highlights card is just one that I hadn't happened to pick up in the 29 years since it's been released.

A few recent Topps A's autos on the top row. The Vida Blue completes the 2005 Pristine Gold Refractor/65 team set, one of my favorite Refractor sets of all time. And I got lucky with another Topps Now card and received an Orange parallel 2/5. They also sent the regular version of the same card instead of another card I had ordered at the same time. Thanks Topps.

1963 Bazooka Al Simmons, I think that gets me halfway there for the team set. A couple of '90s McGwires I didn't have, a 1991 7-Eleven coin and 1996 Circa Access. And the 10-card 1987 Card Collector's Company McGwire set.

052121-2.jpg
A Tejada 1/1 auto out of 2021 Tier One...the 1/1s are supposed to be gold ink but I guess Miguel used the same bronze pen as the /25 autos. A bit annoying but it's still a 1/1. The second of three Tim Hudson autos out of 2021 Tier One as well, the third is on the way. The 2002 Pristine Gold Refractor/70 Zito leaves me 2 away from the team set. The 2010 Topps Sterling Cobb continues my slow march towards completing all the Sterling base A's. The 2018 Immaculate/99 Chapman finishes what I consider to be all of my base A's needs from 2014 to 2019, but what I consider a base card changes depending on my mood so that['s not saying anything really. Finally the 2004 Cracker Jack Mini Blue Jermaine Dye finishes off that team set.

2020 Contender Optic Lewis/Dilfer Green Pulsar 01/27. Overpaid for this card from Australia because I was worried I wouldn't see it again...and I haven't seen another yet. The other versions I overpaid for from this set I've seen a ton of at way lower prices than I paid, so I guess it evens out haha. Still haven't seen the /10 and 1/1 parallels. 2003 Fan Favorites Refractor Canseco 003/299 - one of my favorite parallel sets of all time and they are kind of tough to find now for /299 cards. Still missing the 2003 Vida Blue and 2004 Canseco, and my 2005 Canseco is sitting at COMC so it'll be a while before I have it in hand. The 2004 Mirror Blue Zito finishes up my run of 2001-2005 Mirror Red/Blue/Gold Zitos, not counting the 2003-2005 auto & GU versions. 2002 Finest X-Fractor Protector 09/99 Tim Hudson completes that team set. And the 2009 Sterling Reggie completes that team set as well.

I hope Dakota Chalmers is nicknamed "superintendent" and I really hope he played with a Skinner somewhere so he could tell his name all the time.

I 100% think Superintendent Chalmers every time I search for one of his cards. He was traded to the Twins a few years back and hasn't been that great in their system so far, hopefully he can make it and have either that nickname or Super Nintendo Chalmers.

Lots of 90s goodness over the weekend and today plus some Topps Now Yadi stuff

1998 Donruss Significant Signatures - Nolan Ryan Refractor /2,000 and Phil Rizzuto /1,000
Nolan Ryan Refractor.jpg Phil Rizzuto Black Ink.jpg

The Nolan refractor was a redemption (still looking for the unsigned exchange card if someone has one) so they're numbered out of 2,000 but I don't know how many were redeemed. The Rizzuto is also numbered out of 2,000 but he only returned 1,000 of them in time for pack out. There are versions of his card with both black and blue ink so I'll be adding a blue ink version soon.

1998 Leaf State Representatives /5,000
Jeter State Reps.jpg
These look so much better in hand. The etching just doesn't show up in scans well.

1996 Pinnace Essence of the Game Chipper Jones - These are like the Skylines set's stepsiblings to me. They're still great cards.

1996 Pinnacle 1st Rate Chipper Jones - Can't be a 90s mailday without some Dufex right?
Chipper 1st Rate.jpg

Yadier Molina Topps Now - I'm not a big Topps Now fan but with Yadi's career winding down I've been snagging the cards they issue to mark milestone moments for him.

The 2020 Select Dilfer auto is the "white" version 33/35. Oddly I've only seen a couple of these show up, both of the /25 versions seem like they are easier. The Odyssey Dilfer is 20/50, I already had the misnumbered /150 version but had decided for whatever reason at the time to not go after both the error and corrected versions (I don't think Beckett lists them separately plus I was a broke college student), picking up the versions I don't have as I see them. Havens is for my signed '88 Topps set, the pickups have slowed down as I have approached 95%. There's still a dozen or so guys like Havens that should be cheap but I just hadn't happened to see a signed '88 pop up, I'll just have to keep whittling it down. The McGwire 1997 Fleer Tiffany checklist card gets me down to 4 needed for the team set. And this was the last of 3 Tim Hudson /300 autos I needed out of 2021 Tier One.

052421-2.jpg
Some more A's Refractors...Thomas completes the 1996 Topps Chrome Black Refractor team set. The Andrew Bailey gives me his 2009 Topps Chrome RC auto rainbow, minus the super.

052421-3.jpg
And some cards direct from Topps that I thought were cool.

Possibly the most exciting pickup I've had in a few years. It's an item I've been looking for (and posting on the BST boards here) for a few years.

1946 Nashua Dodgers Don Newcombe Contract

To provide a bit of historical background (which I'm sure is familiar to many here). In the off-season between the 1945 and 1946 baseball seasons, the Dodgers made history by signing 4 black players. Famously, the first player they signed (who would also break the color barrier when he was the first called up to the Majors after 1 season in the Minors) was Jackie Robinson. After Robinson, they signed a pitcher named John Wright who was to be Jackie's roommate. He had talent, but struggled under the circumstances and never made the Majors. Both players initially played for the Dodger's AAA team in Montreal. Branch Rickey understood the challenge these players would face, and so wanted to make sure they were paired off.

The other pair of black players that Rickey signed were Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe. While initially assigned to Danville, IL, they were reassigned to play for the Nashua Dodgers (under manager Walt Alston) after the Danville team indicated they were not ready to integrate.

A number of years back I was lucky enough to acquire Roy Campanella's 1946 Nashua contract (as well as his Danville contract). I had been searching and trying to acquire Newcombe's Nashua contract for years with no success.

Recently I was able to work a deal for Newcombe's Nashua contract, and I'm thrilled to be able to add it to the collection alongside the Campanella contracts from the same season.

For me when it comes to integration, the contract, which was in many ways the first step towards integration, was a huge deal. Both Newcombe and Campanella signed their contracts before Jackie (or any other black player) had played a game in the Minors or Majors.

Huge Topps Black pickup, the 2009 Frank Thomas 15/58. Still 2 away from that team set. A couple of McGwires including 1997 Leaf Dress for Success 0854/3500. And a couple of '00s parallels I needed, the Mulder is 31/50.
