Hey all,

I just had an incredibly frustrating discussion during a fantasy baseball mock draft where it was my contention that Jose Reyes is incredibly overrated and as a Mets fan, I would gladly field trade offers for him. I'm not talking about fantasy as obviously the guy puts up good stats when considering an entire season, but claiming that he is the "anti-clutch;" at this point he has done nothing but show an overall lack of discipline and clubhouse presence while fading miserably down the stretch.

I offered the following as evidence, Jose's September #'s during the past 2 miserable September collapses compared to his overall season stats:

2007 Overall #'s: .280 BA, .354 OBP
2007 September #'s: .205 BA, .279 OBP

2008 Overall #'s: .297 BA, .358 OBP
2008 September #'s: .243 BA, .342 OBP

I maintain that Jose is in no way a vital piece of the Mets championship puzzle and his trade value is far greater than his actual value to the team's chances of winning a title. Mets fans - am I crazy?

and as Omar, who would you trade him for?

Excellent question. I couldn't think of anyone else ....position for position...than to package deal Reyes out for Hanley. Keep in mind..I am NOT talking anything about contracts...I am merely looking at it like a Fantasy trade.

Yah, I think you are nuts :). (I think the same about the people who dismiss A-Rod for his October's.)

IMO 2 September's are way too short (and random) a time to be basing a player on. Reyes IMO (despite what some like to term having a low "baseball IQ" ) is one of the best players in baseball. Lead-off hitter with some pop. Game-changing speed. Really good K/BB ratio. There is a very very short list of players I would take over him if I was building a club.

This is a debate I always laugh at. I would not take Reyes for free(well maybe free and stick him in the minors). I just feel he hurts a club so much off the field and on at some times. Will he put up good numbers? of course. So does/did Bobby Abreu but he is an absolute loser. All Abreu does is worry about himself and really doesn't care if he wins or loses. I feel Reyes is the same.

I'm sure I'll catch some flack for this but oh well.

Ah, dude, Reyes is the purest lead off hitter in the league.

You can make an argument that Hanley is better, but Reyes is a better contact hitter, and is a better base runner. Usually he gets on first with a walk, or a hit, he steals second, so its almost like he doubles so much more.

Reyes will go down as THE BEST lead off hitter when his time is done.

I like Reyes as much as the next guy...but the best lead off hitter ever was, is and always will be Rickey.

Not arguing that. Even though I don't really think he will be the best ever, I am saying I wouldn't want him on my team. A team that wants to win.

I don't like Reyes.

That said, if GMs around the league were polled on what player they would start a team with, Reyes would make most top 20 lists.

Electric player, and vital to the Mets' success. He is every bit as important as David Wright to that team.

Because Reyes has crappy Septembers does not mean he does not help the mets.I do recall quite a few top mets choking and not performing as well in September.Reyes can't flush the team down the toilet all by himself.I do agree he may be overrated in ,and only in ,the fact he plays for a big market team but seriously...there are quite a few other members of the mets who I feel are way more overrated than Jose.

As for team chemistry...I never really thought of that as a valid argument for a teams demise. These guys for the most part show up and play ball. They are not obligated to like or even talk to each other.Hell...if the yankees could win with some of the players they have had over the years...anybody can.

I wouldn't say overrated at all. Very good player, and perhaps one of the best leadoff hitters in the game today. Lets not forget about his defense.

On the card side of the coin, his cards are undervalued. IMO.

I wouldn't say he is overated, he brings alot of speed to the lineup and can get into scoring position pretty easily by using his speed. He has above average power for Shortstop, he also brings spunk to the team.

Reyes and Cano are very similar, have very high potential but cant reach it, hopefully we will see both players breakout this season

I know your a Phillie fan but thats just ridiculous.
Reyes can do just about everything. He gets on base,he steals,he plays good defense, hes one of the best leadoff hitters in the game and he adds a spark that just about no one else in baseball can add to a team.

I'll take a stab at it and say Overrated. However, that does not mean I don't think he's a great talent. He's a very good player, but I do think he is over hyped by the media and fans sometimes. This just coming from a guy who gets to see him around 18 times a year and a handful of times in person (not a lot, but more than most non NL East fans).

As said before, who is an all around better SS? I would rather have reyes for 10+ more years then jeter for 3 or 4. No way you can call hanly a true SS. I would like to see what tulo does this year being healthy i think he can challenge jose for top SS.( on a side note, arod is the best ss in the game)
