I know this is coming from a Braves fan, but why not pay the $3 million a year extra and get Derek Lowe. I know the extra year and age are a factor, but you can pencil in Lowe for 200 innings. Oliver has never, although he has come close twice. Oliver is also under .500 for his career. Just seems kinda odd to me.

4 years at $60 vs 3 years at $36 is a big difference

plus, omar was said to have preferred perez over lowe so in the end, omar got what he wanted

plus, we can use that $24 on manny (get of your fanny, we want manny!)

dave

You are correct, but lets not forget the option. If the option for the 4th is comparable to the rest of his contract (assuming an extra $12 million) and depending on how easily it is reach, it'll push it to $48 million. Still, a $12 million extra over the life of the contract isn't that much more to pay, espicially for a big market team.

However, its much easier to spend someone else's money. ;)

If you do not get manny, will this off season be considered a failure and will you be screaming for Omar's head to get shipped to Latin America?

honestly, it's hard to tell because we did adress the bullpen issues and signed perez (and garcia, i like that signing btw) but recently, i've been reading the papers and read that some group of mets fans marched in the city chanting "we want manny, we want manny.." lol!

if we dont make the playoffs, i am very certain us mets fans will scream for omar's head and he may be gone because of all the "i told u so's" about not signing or attempting to sign manny

Yeah, which is why we need an OBP guy who takes a lot of pitches like Abreu. I almost (repeat, almost) think the money is better spent on Abreu and Orlando Hudson than Manny, and then we can tire-kick Castillo and stomach the loss more after getting 2 bargains.

Abreu is a defensive nightmare, but Manny isn't?

Last I checked, you could put Abreu in left like the braves are looking at doing.

i guess if they stuck him in left, it wouldnt be so bad.
RF in citifield is a nightmare. theres an overhang that comes over the RF fence and impeeds
in fair territory. just nasty lol

Even with my biased opinion towards Mexican players, I have to agree that giving those millions to someone like Perez is risky. Perez can be really good sometimes, but a word that perfectly describes him is "inconsistent".

I'm really happy that he signed and specially with a big market team, but because of that I really hope that he pitches according to his salary or he will become very unpopular in no time (probably there's a lot of people that don't link him already because they signed him instead of Lowe or Sheets).
