Am I the only one that didn't know that when the Marlins move into their stadium next year that the will also be changing their name from Florida to Miami. The local newspaper had a write up on the Marlins today and included this little tidbit.

I had no idea either... that actually sounds pretty cool though!

Yep, it was part of Miami agreeing to pay for much of the stadium.

It will harken back to the original Miami Marlins, who were a minor league team there years ago.

Here's Jim Palmer playing for them back in '68

The prophecy of Back to the Future 2 will be closer to being fulfilled. Now we just need the Cubs or Miami to switch leagues for that WS to happen.

How deep is it to left center at the new ballpark? I am curious to know if this is advantageous for Stanton? Thanks in advance!

The Marlins announced that the new stadium will retain some of the features that Sun Life Stadium currently has, especially the outfield dimensions. The deepest part of the new ballpark will be 420 feet (130 m) from home plate, and then it will slant down to 416 feet (127 m) in straight-away center field. The "power alley" in right-center will be 392 feet (119 m). The shortest dimension will be 335 feet (102 m) down the right-field line. The vast area in the "power alley" in left-center at Sun Life Stadium, also known as "The Bermuda Triangle", will also transfer to the new stadium. At FanFest in 2009, team President David Samson announced that the shallow left field and deep right field at Dolphin Stadium will be flip-flopped at the new ballpark.

Finally!

Now the Marlins need to move to the AL, so that the prediction in Back to the Future II can become true, with a Cubs 2015 World Series win over the Miami (Marlins).

Hopefully with the new ball park they draw better. It must get kinda depressing to play in front of an empty or mostly empty house every night. Good luck to them in their new digs.

I don't see any reason why they won't be much more successful in drawing fans. Being in Miami should help a ton. No one wants to drive out to nowhere to see a game. Anytime you have to list directions to the stadium from Miami on your website it's not a good thing.

In February 2008, it was announced that the Florida Marlins will change their name to Miami Marlins when they move into their planned new stadium at the former site of the Orange Bowl in 2012.

Although the team only existed for 5 years (1956-60) One of the Greatest Pitchers of All Time played some ball for the Miami Marlins of the International League (Phillies AAA)

Satchel Paige went 11-4 with a 1.86 ERA in 1956, 10-8 in 1957, and 10-10 in 1958

PS. On August 7, 1956, the largest crowd in minor league history (57‚000) came to see Miami's 50-year-old Paige beat Columbus at the Orange Bowl.

Im sure every hardcore baseball fan in Miami already knew all this ;)
